Our History

In 1918, Mr. D. R. "Rybe" Henderson, the grandfather of Mr. David M. Farris who is an owner of the Farris Funeral Service, purchased a country general store in Saltville, Virginia. As was common during that time, coffins were among the items offered for sale to the public.

In 1952, Mark and Sally Farris moved to Abingdon to establish a branch of the funeral home located in Saltville, Virginia. Several years later they purchased the Abingdon location and, in 1974, the name was changed to Farris Funeral Service.

David M. Farris and his wife Barbara purchased the funeral home from his parents in 1982. Today, they share ownership and management responsibilities with their children, Kimberly Farris Luke and David M. Farris, II.

Our firm is fortunate to have an outstanding and highly qualified group of associates equally committed to providing the best of funeral care to residents of this area.

In late 2002, two new businesses were added to the Farris Service 20110109DCP00866.jpgGroup to better serve our community. The Farris Cremation and Funeral Center was constructed on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, which allows us to provide cremation services on-site by our own staff - and also provides a new facility for funeral services and visitations. This is especially suitable for those being interred in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

  • A full line of related merchandise
