Howard M. Felty

Mr. Howard M. Felty, 83, died Friday, July 4, 2008 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia D. Felty; 2 sons; Howard William Felty and wife Lynda of Bristol, Va., and Charles Woodrow Felty of Chilhowie; 2 daughters; Sue Johnson and husband Jim of Bristol, Va., and Sherry Oliver and husband Roger of Piney Flats, Tn.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Dwayne Locklear and Pastor Eddie Crusenberry officiating.   Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.      

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.   The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hettie Perkins Felty

Mrs. Hettie Perkins Felty, age 95, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at  Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Born on June 29, 1913 in Washington County, Virginia, Hettie was a daughter of the late William Alexander Perkins and Polly Ann Dye Perkins. She was the widow of Charles Lewis Felty and was also preceded in death by her daughter Lola Marie Pickle and her granddaughters, Lisa Ann Thompson Barr and Linda Carol Felty Ross.

She attended the Trigg Street Church of God.

Survivors include her sons, Bacel Felty and wife Clara of Bristol, VA and Bill Felty and wife Barbara of Abingdon; her daughters, Thelma Felty Hinkley of Abingdon; Mary Arnett and husband William  and Patty Felty Collins and husband Ron all of Bristol, VA and Peggy Felty Hall and husband Devin of Brentwood, CA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. Monday, July 7, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Wayne Chant, ________________ and Evangelist Bob Steele officiating. The committal and burial service will be conducted at 10:00 A. M. Tuesday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending this service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 A. M. Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Thomas, Bobby Inscore, William Arnett, Michael Meade, Brandon Hall, Curtis Felty, Randy Felty and Brian Felty.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:45 P. M. Monday  before the service at the funeral home.

In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Trigg Street Church of God Building Fund, 335 Trigg Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Juanita Williams Berry

Mrs. Juanita Williams Berry, 88, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at her residence.  She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a daughter of the late Albert and Bessie Burke Williams.  She was a member of Palestine Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis C. Berry and two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by four daughters; Alicia Joyce Smith of Abingdon, Carmen Blevins of Abingdon, Victoria Odham of Damascus, and Delcine Fitzgerald of Simpsonville, S.C.; one brother; Hyler Williams of Abingdon; a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Berry Cowan of Abingdon; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Pastor John Stapleton officiating.  Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:45 a.m. 

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Pallbearers will be John Smith, Willis Blevins, Edd Odham, Leon Smith, Kevin Cummings, and Tony Inscore.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Martha Martin, Mrs. Berry’s caregiver, and to Loudell Clevinger for all of their love and support.

Pauline Stewart Jones

Pauline Stewart Jones, age 93, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, departed this life on July 7, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Jewel Bascom Jones.  Survivors include her devoted children, Sue Foil (Richard) of Abingdon, VA, and Paul Jones (Colleen) of Opelousas, LA, her grandchildren Pamela Jones (Michael Greco) of Shreveport, LA, Mary Foil Russell (Ken) of Abingdon, VA, Marsha Semon (Michael) of Birmingham, AL, Allison Jones (Philip Downer) of Shreveport, LA, Matt Jones (Chalin) of Lafayette, LA, Richard E. Foil, Jr. (Mary Beth) of Holly Springs, NC, and her great-grandchildren Joshua Downer, Morgan Russell, Madelyn Semon, Elizabeth Russell, Sarah Foil, Micah Semon, Stephen Downer, Richard E. Foil, III, Luke Jones, Kelly Jones, and David Foil.

Pauline was born in Chunky, Mississippi, the youngest child of Ludella Kelly Stewart and Theodore Adolphus Stewart.   She married Jewel Jones in 1932 and lived and worked in Angie, Louisiana for most of her life.  She was employed at the Angie Post Office for 35 years, serving as Postmaster for much of that time.   She was a long-time member of the Angie Baptist Church, where she served in various capacities, including as a Sunday School teacher and church Treasurer. After moving to Abingdon, VA in 1984, Pauline became a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church, where she attended the Fellowship Class and was a member of the Mary Pace Circle.    

The family will receive friends at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 9, 2008 with a memorial service following in the chapel of Farris Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m.   A church service and interment will follow in Angie, LA.

Timothy Johnson

Mr. Timothy Lee “Timmy” Johnson of 548 Shenandoah Drive, Glade Spring, VA, departed this life on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the age of 43.  He was born on December 23, 1964 to Myrtle E. Johnson and the late Sylvester Johnson.  He was educated in the Washington County School System.  Timmy was preceded in death by his father, Sylvester Johnson, and by one sister, Beatrice Whittington.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory two sons, Kenneth Wright and Jeremy Wright, both of the home; his mother, Myrtle Johnson; four sisters: Anita Large, Velma Branch, Barbara Bradley and Janet Hagler; several nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives, and many special friends.

The funeral service for Timmy Johnson will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with his sister, Barbara Bradley, Minister, and Rev. Melvin Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.  Active pallbearers will be Kris Barnes, Randy Hagler, James Hagler, Troy Brown, Coy Large, and Doug Hagler.  Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Coleman, Daniel Hounshell, Jr., John Stanley, James Wright, Jr., Rossalee Hagler and Dan Hounshell, Sr.

Cleo Doak Booher

Mrs. Cleo Doak Booher, 89, a resident of Cambridge House, died Monday, July 7, 2008.  She was born in Washington County, Virginia and lived most of her life in the Abingdon and Bristol areas.  She was a member of Beulahland Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Booher and her brother William Doak.

She is survived by her niece Linda Galyon of Sweetwater, Tennessee.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, July 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

DoraLee Ornduff

DoraLee Ornduff, 81, a resident of Valley Health Care, died Wednesday July 9, 2008.  She was born in Exeter, Virginia and had lived in Abingdon since 1946.  She graduated from Oak Hill Academy in 1946 and the Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1949.  She was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and a retired Registered Nurse at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by 3 sons, Don Ornduff and wife “Bunny” of Boone, N.C., Larry Ornduff of Abingdon, and Rick Ornduff and wife Teresa of Abingdon; and 3 grandchildren, Ashley Ornduff of Roanoke, Va., and Justin and Colin Ornduff both of Boone.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Paul Viers and Mrs. Barbara Farmer officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Hazel Musick South

Mrs. Hazel Musick South, age 90, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia, and she enjoyed traveling on bus tours.  She was a member of Denton Valley Baptist Church.  Mrs. South was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles C. “Buck” Musick, and by her second husband, Russell South.

She is survived by her son, Larry K. Musick and wife Arlene of Franklin, KY; her daughters Patsy D. Sweet and husband Robert of Abingdon, and Teresa Doss of Bristol, TN; her sister Bonnie Musick of Bristol, VA; and two grandchildren, Lori and Matthew Musick.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hazel Musick South will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Denton Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Stevens officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. View United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Sam Price, David Jones, Everette Stevens, Norman Roberts, Jackie Sweet, and J. C. James Dennis Ling

James Dennis Ling, 74, passed away Friday, July 11, 2008 at his residence.

James was a native of Kentucky, had lived in the Abingdon area since 1987 and was a coal miner.  He was a member of the 21st Century Church of Christ. 

He was preceded in death by George Ling and Victoria Ling-Deel and step-father, Ezra Deel, four brothers, George Ling, Jr., John W. Ling, LeRoy and Troy Deel.  Also preceded in death by his first wife, Nina Kirby Ling. 

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Ann Ling, Abingdon, VA, his daughter, Lisa Holbrook, Kingsport, TN, his step-children, Ronald White, Tazewell, VA, Debbie Davidson, Abingdon, VA, Terri Baker, Salem, VA, Kimberly Liles, Abingdon, VA, his sisters, Sylvia Hill and Lavon Ratliff both of Abingdon, VA, Ann Howard, Rural Retreat, VA, his grandchildren, Danielle Holbrook and Morgan Holbrook,  step-grandchildren, Meghan Lambert, Amanda Davidson, Justin Davidson, R. J. White, Jonathan White, his step-great grandchildren, Tea Davidson, Lexus Barrett and Laken Barrett. 

The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Michael McCoy, Evangelist, and Walter Switzerlette and Hobart Kennedy, Ministers officiating. 

Interment will be on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rt. 75, Abingdon.  The John Ratliff American Legion Post #164, Grundy, VA will present full military honors at the graveside. Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.

Jane Lochiel DeVault Ramsey

 

Mrs. Jane Lochiel DeVault Ramsey passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008 at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon.

Mrs. Ramsey was the daughter of the late Edward Guerrant DeVault and Martha Fain DeVault. She attended King College and was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Jane Ramsey, her brother, Edward DeVault and her sister Mary DeVault Butcher.

Mrs. Jane DeVault Ramsey is survived by her husband, Charles Casto Ramsey; one son, Charles “Skip” Hilman Ramsey, Damascus, VA; one daughter, Mary Fain Ramsey and her husband Lewis Purifoy, Charlottesville, VA; one neice, Martha Butcher Crowe; three nephews, James Butcher, Ed and Russell DeVault; two grandchildren, Anna Ramsey Purifoy and Layla Anne Smith; and three great grandchildren Izabella, Solana, and Nyellie Smith. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ruby Zieg, her children Steve and Randy Zieg, and Karla Cline, their children and grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mrs. Jane DeVault Ramsey will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 1 pm at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, TN. The family will receive friends at the home. Peggy S. Helton

Peggy S. Helton died Monday, July 14, 2008, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  She was born and raised in Washington County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Hulen H. and Willie Clyde Garrett Scott.  She had retired from employment with Sprint.

She is survived by her sons, Stephen Helton and Tommy Helton, both of Bristol, VA; one brother, Kenneth Scott of Chase City, VA; four sisters:  Janie Hagy of Abingdon; Jettye Minton of Abingdon; Joy Stout of Boone, NC; and Patsy Reeves of Hilliard, FL; and several nieces and nephews 

The graveside funeral service for Peggy Helton will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon.  Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.  Those planning to attend the service are invited to meet at the cemetery by 11:20 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele’s Road, Bristol, TN 37620.

Betty Lou Davenport

Betty Lou Davenport, age 68, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Betty had been a resident of Washington County, VA for the past twenty-six years and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira McDavid and Ellen Harless McDavid, a brother, Howard McDavid, two sisters, Louise McDavid and Nellie McPeters.

Survivors include her husband, Coy N. Davenport, Meadowview, VA, her sons, Robert Lee Wilson and wife, Kathy Wilson, Church Hill, TN, Michael Wilson and wife, Wanda Wilson, Abingdon, VA, her daughter, Deborah Calton, Church Hill, TN, her brother, Alvin McDavid, Kingsport, TN, her sisters, Mildred Duncan and Charlotte Neeley both of Kingsport, TN, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her special little friend, her dog Tiny.

The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor Chad Johnson and Reverend Willie Neeley officiating.

Charles Thomas Fleenor, Jr.

Charles Thomas  “Junebug” Fleenor, Jr.died Wednesday, July 16, 2008. He was born on July 11, 1917 in Washington   County, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Lee Bussey Fleenor; his grandson Anthony Wayne Fleenor; his parents, Charles T. Fleenor and Ethel McCroskey Fleenor; his  brothers Earl Fleenor, Arthur Fleenor and Virgil Fleenor,   and his  sister, Margaret Whitt.

He was a lifelong member of Wyndale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his son Jackie Wayne Fleenor and wife, Mary of Abingdon; his daughter, Patty Fleenor Lilly and husband Tommy Lilly of Abingdon; his grandchildren, Thomas Lilly and wife Michele; Jennifer Hensley and husband Trevor; Tracy Fleenor Pannell, Debbie Burke and husband Ronnie, Leighton Fleenor, Amanda Stallard and husband Matt, his great grandchildren, Chase Pannell, Ryker McMurray, Callie McMurray, Sarah Lilly, Hannah Lilly, Emily Hensley and Bailey Hensley; his sister Lillie Mae Shortt, his sister in law, Helen Bussey Fleenor and  several cousins, nephews and nieces.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Ministers David Radar and Amy Bartee officiating.   Those wishing to attend the funeral service  are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M. Saturday. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Denny Ray Lambert

 

Dr. Denny Ray Lambert, M.D., passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at his home in Bristol, TN.

He was born June 28, 1955 in Pikeville, KY.  He was the son of the late Andrew Lambert.  Also preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Walter and Vernie O’Quinn of Bee, VA; his paternal grandparents, Marvin and Della Lambert of Dante, VA; his aunts, Edith Glanckopf, of Buffalo, NY, and Sophie Lambert and Zana Kiser, both from Dante, VA; his uncles, Ola O’Quinn and Aubrey O’Quinn, both of Bee, VA; and his first cousins, Randall O’Quinn and Wanda O’Quinn, both of Abingdon, VA.

Dr. Lambert graduated high school from Haysi High School in Haysi, VA.  He was a scholar who gathered an abundance of knowledge and education from many different schools.  He received an Associate Degree from Southwest Virginia Community College, his Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and his Medical Degree from East Tennessee State University’s Quillen-Dishner College of Medicine.  He completed his Psychiatry Residency at Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman, OK.  Dr. Lambert practiced medicine in various locations throughout Oklahoma, Alabama, and Tennessee.  He was one of the most sought-after physicians in his field, and he helped save countless lives of others during his lifetime.  He entered retirement early in the summer of 1999 due to his progressive illness.

Survivors include his wife, Muoi Lambert of Bristol, TN; his oldest son, John Lambert of Bristol, TN; his daughter, LeAnn Lambert of Bristol, TN; his youngest son, William Lambert of Bristol, TN; his mother, Velva Lambert of Abingdon, VA; and his brother, Kyle Lambert of Abingdon, VA.

The funeral service for Dr. Denny Lambert will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Tam Hill officiating.  The family will receive friends Friday evening prior to the service from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. 

The burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Temple Hill Memorial Park.  Those wishing to attend the graveside service may meet at the funeral home by 1:00 p.m. for a procession to the cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Steven Taylor, Greg O’Quinn, Jordan Compton, Brandon Nguyen, Kevin Nguyen, Michael O’Quinn, Larry Counts, and Jay Counts.  Honorary pallbearers will be Glen O’Quinn, Buster O’Quinn, Earl O’Quinn, Emory O’Quinn, Eddie O’Quinn, Roy Kiser, Benson McGraw, Kyle Lambert, William Lambert, and John Lambert.

Bertie L. Little

Mrs. Bertie L. Little, 74, left this life to be with Jesus on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She was a true friend and inspiration to all who knew her.

Born December 5, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Flora Fields.  She was a member of the Outreach for Christ Church of Abingdon.  She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel S. Little and daughter Rebecca D. Little.

She is survived by three children, Daniel G. Little, Jerry W. Little, and Wanda Little, all of Abingdon; 4 grandchildren, Daniel and Josh Little, Kimberly Edlund, and Amanda Little; 6 great grandchildren, Dominick, Cassidy, Ebony, Peyton, Ryan, and Jonathon.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Richard Gunn and the Rev. Rick Wyatt officiating.  Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Helton, Kenny Dea, Matt Helton, Mark Paige, Herbert Little, and Bobby Helton.

Katherine Adams Johnson

Katherine Adams Johnson, 70, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

 

Katherine was a life-long resident of Washington County, VA and attended Highlands Fellowship and Solid Rock Baptist Church. Katherine was an avid reader who valued learning throughout her life. She loved nature and being outdoors in the garden, at a ballgame, in the mountains, and especially at the beach. Katherine was a loving wife and best friend for over fifty years.  She was completely devoted to her family and friends.  Every person was always welcomed by her beautiful smile.  Katherine was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Edd and Nina Wilson Adams; two brothers, Leighton Adams and Clifford Adams; two sisters Virginia Jobe and Charlotte Salmon.

 

Survivors include her loving husband W.J. “Bill” Johnson, Abingdon, VA; two sons, Joey Johnson, Abingdon, VA, Jonathan Johnson and wife Karen, Abingdon, VA; two brothers Jimmy Adams, Chilhowie, VA, Eddie Adams, Kansas City, MO; three sisters, Ann Browning, Abingdon, VA, Nancy Vestal, Abingdon, VA and Linda Rose, Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Bridger, Jake, Eric and Beren Johnson; four great grandchildren, Hunter, Brenden, Rachel and Samuel Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

Gertrude Mahala DeFriece

Mrs. Gertrude Mahala DeFriece, 92, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at NHC Healthcare of Bristol.  She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Shady Grove Pentecostal Church.  She enjoyed gardening and spending time with people.  She was preceded in death by her husband Wade Frank DeFriece.

            She is survived by 2 sons, David DeFriece and wife Rita of Abingdon, and Larry DeFriece and wife Brenda of Bristol, TN; one daughter, Penny Dillard and husband Buddy of Afton, TN; 3 sisters, Mary Branson of Abingdon, Kathleen Henley of Abingdon, and Margaret Ford of Bristol, TN; 8 grandchildren, 8  great grandchildren, and a special caregiver, Barbara Rutledge.

            A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Shady Grove Pentecostal Church with Pastor Mike Scoresome officiating.

Katherine Blevins Thomas

Katherine Blevins Thomas, age 78,  passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Katherine was born on August 21, 1929 in Abingdon, Virginia, a daughter of the late William T. Blevins and Lucy Blevins. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Eugene Thomas; her brother, Gilbert Blevins and her sisters, Hazel Hodge, Nannie Snead, Lorrine Castle and Millie Hilt.

Katherine was a  beloved mother and nanny to all. She was affectionately known as “Granny” by those who worked with her. She had retired from Farris Funeral Service after  fifteen years  of service as  Ladies’ Funeral Attendant.  She was a member of the Washington Chapel United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Washington County Lifesaving Crewettes.

Survivors include her son, Wayne S. Thomas of Abingdon; her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and  Carl Barker of Abingdon; her grandchildren, Tina Camper and husband Jerry, Debbie Gonderman and husband Mike, Heather Thomas and Jennifer Thomas all of Abingdon and Stephen Thomas and wife Paula of Columbia, SC; four great grandchildren, Michael and  Amber Gonderman, Mya Hopson and Ella Grace Thomas; her  brothers, William T. Blevins, Jr. of Abingdon and Richard Blevins of Bristol, VA; her sisters, Jean Price and Frances Turley both of Abingdon and Etta Millsap of Lothian, MD and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Monday, July 21, 2008 in the Washington Chapel United Methodist Church with  Rev. David Critcher and her nephew Bill Blevins officiating. Burial will follow the service at Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P. M. Sunday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service or any time at the home of her daughter Shirley and Carl Barker, 878 Hillman Highway in Abingdon. . Active pallbearers will be Bobby Thomas, Gary Thomas, David Thomas, Rocky Thomas, Mike Price and Kevin Turley. Oscar McCray

           Oscar Monda McCray, 87, surrounded by loved ones, went to rest with his Lord and Saviour July 18, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. 

Monda was a resident of Hayter’s Gap where he was loved and cherished by all who knew him.  His humble disposition always rendered a loving heart. He was a WWII veteran where he proudly served in the United States Army. He served as a deacon and trustee for 35 years at Valley View Assembly of God. During his work career he was employed by Olin-Matheson, Clinchfield Coal Company, and retired at General Engineering. Inspired by the hand of God his life was inspirational for those who were in his presence.  Monda spent much of his free time fishing, looking for artifacts, and taking pictures.  He is loved and will be missed by all.

Monda is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Reba McCray and their three children Linda Dufour and Arthur of Meadowview, VA, Pat Dobbins and Ronnie of Leakesville, MS, and Gary McCray and Loretta of Abingdon, VA. He is also survived by six (6) grandchildren; David Johnson, Shelby Sheppard, Bryan McCray, Scarlet McDonald, Ryan Dobbins, Wendy Bennett; ten (10) great grandchildren Victoria, Julie, Cody, Mattie, Lauren, Miranda, Andrew, Maddax, Gracee, and Juleigh; Two (2) great-great grandchildren Haylee and Emilee. He is survived by one brother Ralph McCray.

The family will receive friends at the Valley View Assembly of God Church on Sunday, July 20, 2008 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm with the funeral immediately following.  Rev. Dennis Banks and Billy George Van Dyke will conduct the services.  

Pallbearers include David Johnson, Cody Johnson, Ryan Dobbins, Ronnie Dobbins, Bryan McCray, and David Bennett.

Honorary pallbearers include Charles W. Henderson, Fred and Ronald Surber, Warren and Donald McCray, Michael Ralph McCray, Harold Johnson, Billy George Van Dyke, George Schrader, Mike Barrett, and the men of the Valley View Assembly of God Church.

The committal service will be Monday, July 21, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Memories Mausoleum with Rev. Jimmy Nichols officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veteran’s Honor Guard.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow.

Ernestine Hyter Groseclose

Ernestine Hyter Groseclose, age 89, passed away on Saturday July 18, 2008 in the Highland Ridge Rehab Center in Dublin, VA.

She was a former resident of Washington County and was a member and attended the  Methodist Church most of her life before her illness prevented her form doing so. 

She was the widow of James Hawkins Groseclose and was also preceded in death by her son James Ralph Groseclose. Ernestine had retired from the Martha Washington Inn after 20 years of service.

Survivors include a grandson, Allen Groseclose and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Tuesday, July 22, 2008 in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Meadowview, VA  with Mr. John Shockley officiating. Burial will follow the service.

Dallas M. Whaling, Sr.

Mr. Dallas M. Whaling, Sr., age 80 left to be with his savior Monday July 21, 2008 at his residence.  He attended the Woodland Baptist Church, Abingdon, VA and was a devoted Christian his entire life.  Dallas lived in Castlewood from 1960 until 1990, he was a retired coal miner with Clinchfield Coal Company for thirty years and with Mateland Coal Company for twelve years.  He was a Mason and served in the U. S. Army.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Muriel Whaling of Eckman, WVA a brother, Charlie Whaling, Carswell, WVA, and a sister, Sylvia Whaling, Bluefield, WVA.

Survivors include two sons, James “Jimmy” Whaling and Dallas M. Whaling, Jr. both of Abingdon, VA, three daughters, Sue Yowell, Wilmington, NC, Vickie Whaling, Palm Coast, Florida and Darlene Statzer, Abingdon, VA, five sisters, Mildred Belcher, Princeton, W. VA, Virgie Musick, Kimball, W. VA, Ruth “Tiny” Uhalde, Falls Church, VA, Freda “Squeaky” Higdon, Springfield, VA, Eva Schroeter, McLean, VA, three brothers, Herman Whaling, Bluefield, VA, Fred Whaling, Blacksburg, VA, Clarence “Frank” Whaling, Martinsville, VA, a special friend, Gladys Elem, Castlewood, VA, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor Bob McCormick officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Military honors will be presented by Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Gullett, Ancil Cook, Bob Chafin, Robbie Snyder, Brock Whaling, Mike Chafin. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Jessee, Terry Crusenberry, Jeremy McCloud and Chris Richardson.

Doris Jean Brown

Mrs. Doris Jean Brown, age 54, passed away Monday, July 21, 2008 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

She was our guiding light, love of our lives, wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend.  She will be missed. She is now a shining star in Heaven. 

Survivors include her loving husband, Russell Brown, Jr., her three children, Russell Eugene Shannon Brown, Autumn Shayne Brown-Rife and Jessica Ann Brown, three grandchildren, Kieran Shannon Brown, Aiden Liam Brown and Morgan Shayne Rife, her loving parents, Eugene Breeding and Wanda Breeding, her sister, Sharon Ballard, her brother, Dwight Breeding, her nieces, Sidney and Lesley Ballard and Misty Fish.  Sweet water and light laughter, until we meet again.

The funeral service will be conducted Friday, July 25, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel. Cremation will follow the service.

Irene Margaret Phelps Woodward

 

Mrs. Irene Margaret Phelps Woodward, age 81, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital. 

 

Mrs. Woodward was a life-long resident of Washington County and a member of Woodland Hills Church of Christ.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. Woodward; her parents Frank and Dora Phelps; her daughter-in-law Clara Woodward; her great grandson Ashton Woodward; her brother Elmer Phelps; and her sister Betty Phelps.

 

Survivors include her son Rodney Wayne Woodward, Abingdon; two granddaughters Melanie Guinn, Columbia, SC, and Topaz Christian and husband Gene of Abingdon, VA; and three great grandchildren Peyton Guinn, Dominique Romero and Jayden Christian.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Woodward will be on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 2 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Paul Viers officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Roger Phelps, Keith Phelps, Brian Phelps, Sam Bralley, Raymond Woodward, Gene Christian, and Dominique “Nick” Romero. Ocie Grizzle Sutherland

Ocie Grizzle Sutherland, 83, died Wednesday July 23, 2008 at her residence.  She was born April 17, 1925, a daughter of the late Ora Grizzle and Lula Ethyl Reynolds Grizzle.  She spent most her life in Dickenson County where she helped manage family businesses making a multitude of friends and business acquaintances.  She moved to Abingdon in 1988.  She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Sutherland and her sister, Agnes Mooney, and her brothers, Fonsby, Clinton, and Clyde Grizzle.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Rainey and husband Don of Radford, VA.; her son, Dennis Sutherland of Abingdon; her sister, Marie McCarty of Clintwood, VA.; and her grandchildren, Erin Ratliff and husband Brandon of Cedar Bluff, VA., Ann Rainey of Radford, VA., and Derek Sutherland of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Joe Reiff officiating.  Burial will follow in Lambert Cemetery in Nora, VA.  The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Derek Sutherland, Brandon Ratliff, C. W. Dotson, Chris Raines, Jeff Hayton, Kevin Johnson, and Worley Grizzle.  Wallace Sutherland will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Ethel Millsap

Mrs. Ethel Millsap, age 98, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon.

She is survived by her son, John Singleton and his wife Lillian, Bristol, VA; eight grand children; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Mrs. Millsap will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 8 pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 pm until the time of service. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 11 am at the Knollkreg Memorial Park, those attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 am.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Jonathan Swank, the staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital and Grace Healthcare for the care they provided.

Calvin Fate Caudill

 

Calvin Fate Caudill, age 80, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2008 at Bristol Hospice House. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

 

Calvin was born December 12, 1927 in Wilder, VA to the late Annie Elizabeth Bott Caudill and Edward Caudill. He was an employee of Bristol Steel for 38 years. Calvin was a member of Wyndale United Methodist Church and he enjoyed singing in the choir. He enjoyed the outdoors through gardening, hunting, fishing, his dogs, bicycling and in later years he enjoyed bee keeping. He also enjoyed building furniture. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gwen Lee Caudill. He is also survived by three children and their spouses; Gary Caudill and wife Annette, Chapin, S.C., Sammy Caudill and wife Karen, Bristol, VA and Teressa Wallace and husband Danny, Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Nathan Caudill, Wendy Teitsma, Shannon Caudill, Bradley Caudill, Crystal Garcia, Lindsey Wallace and Grant Wallace; great grandchildren, Carter Lively and Ian Caudill; his sisters, Belvia Riddle, Abingdon, VA, Vivian Bellamy, Meadowview, VA and a brother, Frankie Caudill, Front Royal, VA. He is also survived by his special lifetime friends Johnny Warren and Bobby Gene Lindsey, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Calvin Caudill will be held Sunday, July 27, 2008 at The Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service at 7 p.m. with Rev. Amy Bartee officiating. His family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m. Pallbearers will be Nathan Caudill, Bradley Caudill, Grant Wallace, Danny Wallace, Corey Teitsma, and Roberto Garcia.

James Adam Gibson

James (Jamie) Adam Gibson, age 29, a devoted husband and father, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2008.

Jamie was born on April 12, 1979 in Washington County, Virginia. He was a graduate of Holston High School in Damascus, had worked at the Dana Corporation while attending college and had been employed at Appalachian Casting for seven years. He was preceded in death by his father Miles Eugene Gibson; his grandfather Junior Helbert and his uncle Robert Helbert.

Survivors include his wife Kasey N. Gibson; his daughter Alexandria Gibson of Abingdon; his mother and step-father, Kathy Gibson Carico  and Richie Carico of Abingdon; his brother, Joseph Gibson of Gray, TN; his sister Angela Bowser of Abingdon; his grandmother Lucille Helbert of Abingdon; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Allen and Debbie Newman of Green Cove, VA; his nieces Sunshine Weddle, Shanna Weddle and Kaitlyn Weddle; his nephews Afton Gibson and Jason James Vanover; a special uncle John Helbert and several other uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at  2:00 P. M. Thursday, July 31, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral  Thursday.  Pallbearers will be Allen Newman, Allen Osborne, John Helbert, Myron Wynn, Kevin Helbert and Danny Lukach. Paul Ezra Cullop

Paul Ezra Cullop, 84, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  He was born July 25, 1924 in Washington County to the late Tom and Josephine Cullop.  He was a retired farmer.  He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie M. Cullop, one son David P. Cullop, and a brother Harold Cullop.

He is survived by 2 sons; Jerry W. Cullop and Larry L. Cullop, both of Abingdon; 3 grandchildren; Bryan Cullop of Port St. Luci, FL, Jeffrey Cullop of Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX, and Angela Poe of Wetherford, OK; 5 great grandchildren; Tyler Cullop, Jessie Poe, Amber Poe, Haven Poe, and Brayden Cullop.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor John Price officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military graveside rites provided by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard.

Virgie Maggie Self

 

Mrs. Virgie Maggie Self, 80, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at her residence.  She was born in North Carolina and had lived most of her life in Washington County.  She was of the Holiness faith and had worked in housekeeping at the Alpine Motel in Abingdon for many years.  She was the widow of James (Jim) Self.

She is survived by 2 sons; James Edwin Self and wife Brenda of Abingdon, and Joe Kenneth Self and wife Ruby of Abingdon; 1 daughter; Mary Grace Duncan and husband Johnny of Bristol, VA.; 1 brother; Joe Arvil Roark of Abingdon; 2 sisters; Shelby Jean Branson and Louise Henry, both of North Carolina; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Bob Reynolds officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Michael Ferrell

Michael Neil Ferrell, age 45, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Michael had proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy  for six years. As an organ donor,  he  has been responsible for saving seven lives  and will be remembered by the organ recipient and their families for  his courageous gift of life.

Michael is survived by his parents, Freddie & Janice Ferrell of Emory, Virginia; his loving companion, Shirley Brewster of Abingdon; his sister, Traci Peck and husband Jason of Las Vegas, NV and his grandmother Jean Ratliff of Abingdon, VA.

A memorial service for Michael’s  family and close friends was  held at the home of his Grandmother on Friday, August 1, 2008.
