Collean Sproles Price

Collean Sproles Price, age 69, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008 in Holston Valley Medical Center.

Collean was born in Mendota, Virginia on October, 14, 1938 to the late Henry Lester Sproles and the late Nannie Elizabeth Dye Sproles. Collean had resided in Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center- Hillside located in Kingsport, Tennessee. She had worked for Johnston Memorial Hospital in the cafeteria for 18 years.

Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, A.E. Price and two sisters, Betty Sandefur and Sally Alexander and one brother, Harmon Sproles.

Collean is survived by three sisters, Lena Van Huss of Meadowview, Virginia, Gaynelle Sproles of Meadowview, Virginia and her guardian and sister, Ruby Walsh of Bristol, Tennessee. Three brothers, Oscar Sproles of Bristol, Virginia, Ernie Sproles of Couse, North Carolina, and Jessie Sproles of Glade Spring, Virginia. One daughter, Christy Errmand of Ringold, Georgia. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be great-nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Saturday, May 3, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Bobby S. Roberts     Video

Bobby S. Roberts, 59, passed away, Thursday, May 1, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his loving family, unexpected after a brief illness.

He was born March 9, 1949 to C.W. and Charlotte Roberts. He was a life long resident of the Widener’s Valley Community in Washington County, VA. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. He was a farmer most of his life, had a love for animals, gardening, and his grandchildren.

Bobby is preceded in death by his father C.W. Roberts, his father-in-law, Clayton Owens and mother-in-law Myrtle Owens.

He leaves behind the love of his life, a wife of 37 years, Donna Kaye Owens Roberts, two daughters Alma Widener and husband Danny, Saltville, VA, Penny Blackburn and husband Anthony, Glade Spring, VA, one son Bobby Clayton Roberts of the home; his mother, Charlotte Roberts, Glade Spring, VA; one brother, Mikie Roberts and wife Judy, Abingdon, VA; four grandsons, Scotty Blackburn, Albert Widener, Elijah Widener, Josh Thomas; one granddaughter Collin Widener; four sister-in-laws, Shelia Thomas and husband Johnny, Glade Spring, VA, Sally Powell and husband Ed, Jacksonville FL, Patsy Furchess and husband Tim, Mountain City, TN, Claudine Reece, Laurel Bloomery, TN, Maxine Potter,  P.J. Potter, Laurel Bloomery, TN; one special aunt Agnes Widener, Glade Spring, VA; special friends, Lisa and Jackie Trent, Glade Spring, VA; Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Bobby Roberts will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 2 pm at the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Widener’s Valley with Pastor Doug Stidham and Pastor Mike Bowers. Burial will follow the service at the Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. Pallbearers will be Gary Wolfe, Terry Wolfe, Tim Furchess, Leo Widener, Jackie Trent, and Johnny Thomas. Honorary pallbearers are Mikie Widener, Eddie Widener, William Widener, Gregory Widener, and grandsons P.J. Potter, Jonathan Thomas. Bobby Cumbus     Video

Bobby Everette Cumbus, age 64, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008 at his residence.

Bobby was a native of Georgia and had resided in Abingdon for the past thirty-two years. He was a farmer most of his life and was of the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Francis Cumbus.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Wise and husband Ernest Wise, Abingdon, VA, Wanda Lewis, Asheville, NC, Bobbie Thomas and husband Robert Thomas, Abingdon, VA, one brother, Ansel Cumbus, Ray City, GA, two sisters, Anne White and husband Paul White, Ocala, Florida, Betty Rigdon, Nashville, GA, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Greendale Chapel Cemetery, Rt. 700, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Clark Powers officiating.  Interment will follow the service. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Marion C. Roark     Video

Mr. Marion C. Roark, age 72, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at his home.

He was born September 2, 1935 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Vurner Roark and the late Susie Sheppard Roark. He attended Valley View Freewill Baptist Church and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and friend to all who knew him.

 Besides his parents Mr. Roark is preceded in death by four brothers, Bruce Roark, Clint Roark, Ervil Roark, and Kenny Cody Roark and two sisters, Della Stickman and Lois Royal.

Mr. Roark is survived by his wife of 52 years, Goldie Roark and four children, Tony Roark and wife, Nancy, Connie DeBusk and husband, Frank, Lisa Ennis and husband, Willis; all of Abingdon, Virginia and Lorrie Smith and husband, Tim of Chesterfield, Virginia. Eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, brothers, Fred Roark and Orville Roark and sister, Eula Parker also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 9, 2008 at Valley View Freewill Baptist Church (19423 Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon, VA) with Pastor Greg Dingus and Rev. Herbert Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, May 8, 2008 from 7-9 P.M.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Heath DeBusk, Adam Roark, T.J. Roark, and Derrick Smith, also grandson’s-in-law, Danny Rowe and Steve Miller. Honorary Pallbearers will be McKinley Miller, Charlie Ray Miller, Henry Price, Fred Roark, Orville Roark and Jeff Stiltner.

Samuel A. Snavely     Video

Samuel A. Snavely, 76, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008 at his home.  He was born May 23, 1931 in Washington County, Virginia.  He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Lee and Eva Snavely and one brother Joseph F. Snavely.

            Mr. Snavely retired from Overnite Transportation Company after 43 years of service.  He was a member of East Bristol Baptist Church.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows, which he joined on May 6, 1976 at the age of 44.  He was Noble Grand from 1996-1997 of McCabe Lodge No. 56.

            He enjoyed a very successful bowling career of 43 years, primarily at Interstate Bowl, where he was member of the year 1989-90.  He was a life member and senior bowler of the year 1997-98 in the Bristol Bowling Association and life member in the State of Virginia Bowling Assoc.  Mr. Snavely was inducted into the State of Virginia Bowlers Hall of Fame in September 2002.  He leaves behind many friends and 2 special friends, Mary Crenshaw and Linda McMurray who were always there to help him and his wife.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Margaret T. Snavely who was truly the love of his life; 3 sisters, Gay Farmer, Betty Dye, and Marie Yeatts and husband John all of Abingdon; one brother, Jack Snavely and wife Betty of Meadowview; and 14 nieces and 7 nephews.

          The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday May 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon with Pastor Dan Birchfield officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. 

            The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel.           

            Pallbearers will be Charles Turner, Bobby Hall, Freddie Dye, Tim Pickels, Tim Hoffarth, Bobby Lilly, and Ray Perrigan.  Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Hahn, Diana Raymonds, Linda Thomas, Elizabeth Hahn, Angela Hahn and Brenda O’Neil all of Delaware.

Mrs. Joyce Ann Holmes, age 75, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Joyce was born November 11, 1932 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Ernest J. Price and the late Nettie Musick Price. She had resided in the Abingdon area all her life where she was a member of Temple Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She had worked at Johnston Memorial Clinic for 28 years as a switch board operator and before retiring she worked as a switch board operator at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Joyce loved animals and spending time with family and friends

Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil O. Akers and one sister, Barbara Brown.

Joyce is survived by one daughter, Angie Akers of Bristol, Virginia, step-mother, Stella Price of Abingdon, Virginia, one brother, Pastor John Wesley Price and wife, Wanda of Abingdon, Virginia, three sisters, Carol J. Crane of Bristol, Tennessee, Janet McVey and husband, Charles of Jacksonville, Florida and Beulah Boothe and husband, Gary of Abingdon, Virginia. A special child in her life, Orryn McGlone and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor John Wesley Price officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bernard Lasley, Randy Felty, Kevin Price, Dave Scott, Alan Fields, and Spike Nickels. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men of Temple Baptist Church and the staff of Grace Health Care. Helen Elizabeth Wheeler Humphrey     Video

Helen Elizabeth Wheeler Humphrey, 91, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 11, 2008.  Helen was the eldest member of the Harvest Fellowship Church in Meadowview, Virginia, where she taught Sunday School,  served as president of the Women’s Ministry and was a “spiritual mother” to many.  She was adored by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.  While we have lost an angel here on earth, Heaven has gained one.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Meadowview, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Fonza & Lena Pauline Wheeler.  She was the only girl and had 9 brothers whom she always adored.  She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 52 years, Dewey Trigg Humphrey; her son, Jackie Ralph Humphrey; her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Helms Humphrey; and her brothers Dale Wheeler, Ray Wheeler, Bernard Wheeler, Eugene Wheeler, Everett Wheeler, Herbert Wheeler, and Curt Wheeler.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Peggy J. Tommy Wilson.  Committal services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery. Preston DeHart     Video

Mr. Preston DeHart, 47, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.

Preston was born October 19, 1960 in Beckley, West Virginia to the late Bernard Edward DeHart and the late Barbara Broyles DeHart. He had lived in the Bristol area since 1985 where he had been employed with Dana Corporation. Preston enjoyed bowling, golfing, and camping.

He is survived by two daughters, Ashley DeHart of Bristol, Tennessee, Amanda DeHart of Abingdon, Virginia and their mother, Sandy DeHart of Bristol, Virginia, one grandson; John Paul “J.P.” Eads of Abingdon, Virginia. One brother, Eddie DeHart of Abingdon, Virginia and two sisters, Debbie Hahn and husband, Brad of Abingdon, Virginia and Teresa England and husband, Clyde of Bristol, Virginia. Special friend, Freda Stillwell, of Tazewell, Virginia and he is also survived by a niece and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 P.M. on Sunday, May18, 2008 at Farris Cremation and Funeral Center located at 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, Virginia 24210 (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens). The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 3 P.M. until time for service.

William A. Adams     Video

Rev. William A. “Bill” Adams, age 80, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2008, at Grace Healthcare with his wife and dear friends from Pleasant View United Methodist Church at his side.

 

Bill was born in Clarks Summit, PA, on November 10, 1927, to Hendrick and Edna Adams and grew up on a dairy farm near Walton, NY.  He began taking pictures as a young boy and had a lifelong love of photography.  He intended to make it his career and studied at the New Your Institute of Photography in New York City.  He was working in a commercial art and photography studio when he was called to the ministry in 1950.  He began preparation for the pastoral ministry by attending Tennessee Wesleyan College.  At West Virginia Wesleyan College, he met his future wife, and after graduation they married and moved on to Drew University Theological School in Madison, NJ.  His first pastoral appointment was Shady Grove-Washington Chapel United Methodist Church in Abingdon.  He was ordained Elder in 1960 and served churches in Knoxville, TN; Ooltewah, TN; and Chilhowie, VA.  He spent a year in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at University of Virginia Hospital and began to work in the field of alcohol and drug dependence.  After 12 years of this work, he returned to the pastorate and served churches in Marion, Chilhowie and Damascus before his retirement in 1990.

 

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Crew “Dottie” Adams.  Their children and grandchildren are:  Lattina Adams and daughter Cassandra Echelard of Denver, CO; Nancy Adams and daughters Rachel and Abby Deel of Atlanta, GA; and Jay Adams, his wife Betsy and their sons Sam and Luke of San Carlos, CA.  He is also survived by three sisters: Waneta Gifford of Walton, NY; Eunice Deming and husband Roger of Sidney, NY; and Luceda Tuff and husband Bill of Belleville, WA.  Survivors also include: brother-in-law Ted Crew and wife Peggy of Avon, CT; sister-in-law Jeanie Dotson of Mineral Wells, WV; and special friend Milo Sparling of Marietta, OH.  He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Giles Adams.

 

The family wishes to thank the staff at Grace Healthcare who provided excellent care to Bill for the last three months of his life and to Barbara Watkins who was his friend and helped care for him the previous year.  Special thanks is also due Sissy Frye and the Alzheimer’s caregivers support groups who gave invaluable help to Bill’s wife for the last four years.

 

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Plesant View United Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Jim Goddard, officiating, assisted by Rev. Sullins Lamb and Rev. Bill Hinton.  Interment will be at the Holston Conference – Emory & Henry Cemetery, Emory, VA.

Martha Jane Wise, age 74, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh “Tom” Wise.

 

Survivors include her sons, Earl Wise, Lebanon, VA,  J. D. Wise and wife Lois, Donald Wise and wife Connie, Larry Wise and Teri Phillips, Glenn Wise, her daughters, Glenna Davidson and husband Jeff, Letha Jessee and husband Tony, all of Abingdon, VA,  several brothers and sisters, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one step-grandchild.

 

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 3:00 p. m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Pastor Jason Nunley and Pastor Adam Wise officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Barbara L. Harris

 

Barbara L. Harris, age 78, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at her home.

 

Born in Totz, Kentucky, Barbara was a daughter of the late Denver Creech and Alley Hall Creech. She was a former resident of Williamson and Matewan, WV.

 

She had been a resident of the Abingdon  area since 1977 and attended the Abingdon First Assembly of God Church  (pastored by Roger Williams).

 

Survivors include her husband Paul Harris;  her son, Dwain Harris of Belfry, KY; her daughters Patricia Harris of Abingdon and Anita DesJardinis of Clearwater, FL; her grandsons, Sean DesJardinis of Toronto, Canada, Nick Harris and Rhett Harris both of Clearwater, FL.

 

At the request of Barbara, a private funeral service for family members was conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday, May 17, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with her nephew, Rev.  Thomas Metcalfe officiating. A eulogy was provided by  Debbie Creech. Burial was held in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Richard Metcalfe, Brian Metcalfe, Clark Metcalfe, Christopher Metcalfe, Terry Creech, Jr. and Gary Mietke, Rhett Harris.

Robert Lee Venable

 

Robert Lee Venable, age 57, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 18, 2008. He was a member and Deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church, and an employee of the Ball Corporation where he was the Plant Maintenance General Supervisor. Mr. Venable was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Phillip Venable.

 

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Debra Casey Venable. One daughter: Robin Odum and husband Matt of Abingdon; One son: Robert M. Venable of Meadowview; Two granddaughters who were his pride and joy, Courtney and Cara Odum; One sister: Joan Davenport and husband Wayne of Meadowview; One brother: Mark Venable and wife Sandy of Meadowview and a special niece, Ashley Potrusak of Duffield, VA.

 

Funeral services for Robert Lee Venable will be conducted Tuesday, May, 20, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service at 2:00 pm with Pastor Chad Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

 

At the family’s request, there will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, the family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to those who visited their home over the past several months. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Wanda Mae Hess     Video

Wanda Mae Hess went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 19, 2008 after a long illness at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Wanda was preceded in death by her daughter Patricia Faye Holbrook; her father, Lee Douglas Hess and her brother, Carl Hess.

Wanda will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, other family members and all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her sons, Samuel Lee Holbrook, Jr.  of Atkins, VA; Charles Holbrook and wife Virginia of Saltville, VA; her grandchildren Jessica Holbrook and  C. J. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Rush Creek Cemetery in Widener’s Valley. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12 Noon until the time of the funeral service. Burley L. Rhudy

Burley L. “Bud” Rhudy, 68, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at his residence.

He was the son of Ray and Edith Rhudy of Damascus.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Edith and Ray Rhudy, one sister, Shirley Rhudy and a brother, Jimmy Rhudy, a granddaughter, Cherish Thurston.

He was a member of the Abingdon Moose Lodge until 2004 and was a member of the Damascus Volunteer Life Saving Crew Auxillary.  Bud loved fishing and hunting and best of all his music. He will be greatly missed, but his music will live on thru his family.

He is survived by a very loving and devoted wife, Sally E. Rhudy, his children, Randy Rhudy and a very loving daughter-in-law Shirley, Elizabethton, TN, Dennis Rhudy, Shady Valley, TN, Sandy Long, Butler, TN, Donna Rhudy, Baltimore, MD, Barbara Bott and husband Allen, Abingdon, VA, James E. Stout and wife Kay, Bristol, VA, sisters, Hazel Phillips and husband Frank, Damascus, VA, Frances Haga and fiance’ Maurice Preston, Glade Spring, VA, Grace Rambo and husband Bob, Damascus, VA, grandchildren, Amanda Long, Ashley Long, J. J. Long, Sarah Long, Dedri Rhudy, Josh Rhudy, Courtney Swift and husband Scott, Scott Thurston, two loving grandchildren who helped care for Bud, Christina Bott and Brittany Bott, also nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.  A very loving and kind uncle and aunt, Clarence J. Heath and Nancy Heath.

The funeral  will be conducted Friday, May 23, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with  Rev. Miriam M. Dakin officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Mikie Roark, Eric Rhudy, Jeff Hutton, Benny Weaver, Larry Hicks and Allen Bott. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Richardson, Jack Rhudy, Sam Holbrook, Mac Lester, Bobby Moore, Frank Phillips and James Phillips.

Thanks to all the doctors and nurses that cared for Bud during his illness.

To all my family and friends, remember, this is not goodbye, just see you later.

Luther Grant     Video

Luther Grant, age 82, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 20, 2008, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon, VA.  Luther was born in Roanoke, VA on October 19, 1925.  Very little is known about his early life other than the fact that he was placed at Lynchburg, Training Center at the age of 16.  Prior to that Luther had lived in Foster Care in the state of Virginia.  He became a resident of Cedar Lawn Convalescent Center, now Grace Healthcare, on August 19, 1997, and has lived there ever since.  The staff at Grace Healthcare became his family and protectors                                                                                                                  

Luther has no known biological relatives, but he is nonetheless survived by many persons who loved him and cared for his needs.  Just a few of those persons are special friends, Susan Wright and Teresa Darnell, and his legal guardian, Barbara Farmer.

Luther loved children, music, trains and fire engines.  He could always be spotted in the halls at Grace Healthcare in his red fire chief hat, usually with a radio in his lap playing either country or gospel music.  He loved to draw and had an incredible talent for drawing very detailed pen and pencil drawings.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, May 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with  Pastor Bob Neace officiating.

A special thanks is extended to Dr. Andrew Rhinehart, Jennifer Taylor and all the Staff and employees of Grace HealthCare in Abingdon.

Ophelia Parker Carraway     Video

Mrs. Ophelia Parker Carraway, age 80, passed away peacefully in her home Thursday May 22, 2008 with loved ones by her side.  She had battled Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

Ophelia was born June 11, 1927 in Pitt County, N.C.  She was the tenth child born to the late Elmer B. Parker and Mae Hines Parker.  She graduated in 1949 from East Carolina Teacher’s College and accepted her first teaching job at James Hurst Elementary School in Cradock, a small community in Portsmouth, VA.  She married her longtime sweetheart Dave Carraway on February 3, 1950.  They had three children and eventually moved to the Chesapeake area in 1961 settling in the community of Deep Creek.

Ophelia returned to teaching at G. A. Treakle Elementary School where she taught second grade until her retirement.  She was a dedicated teacher a total of twenty-three years.  She felt great pride when former students saw her and thanked her for being such a wonderful teacher and for teaching them how to read.  While living in that area of Virginia, she was a very involved member of the Cradock Presbyterian Church, teaching children in Sunday school and Bible school.

Following retirement in 1989, she and Dave moved to Abingdon to be closer to family.  She became a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church.  Ophelia’s greatest joy in life was her family.  She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She enjoyed baking, reading, walking, and gardening.  She planted and grew the most beautiful flowers in her yard.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Dave E. Carraway, Sr.; two daughters, Vickie Wilson and husband Danny of Abingdon, and Shelia Ambrose and husband Frank of Lansdowne, VA.; one son, Dave Carraway, Jr. and wife Bobbi of Bristol, VA; nine grandchildren, Stephen Wilson and wife Noelle, Rachel Schallon and husband Matt, Aubyn Carraway, Caitlin Smith, Daniel Smith, Rachel Ambrose, Christopher Ambrose, Savannah Ball, and Olivia Ball; two great grandchildren, Erin Schallon and Sarah Schallon; one sister, Olive Roebuck of Stokes, NC; and two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wants to give special thanks to her many loving, personal caregivers, to the dedicated staff of Home Nursing Service of Southwest Virginia, and to all her wonderful caring “friends” at Hospice of Southwest Virginia, all of which allowed her to remain in her home with her husband the last two years of her illness.  The family also wants to thank the Abingdon Senior Services Center for the nice meals they delivered weekly to the home.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday May 24, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Maurice Lay and Pastor Bob Neace officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Entombment will follow the service at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with a reception to follow in the Forest Hills Chapel Tribute Center.  Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Darlene Bateman Hayter

Darlene Bateman Hayter, age 64, passed away peacefully at Wellmont Hospice on Thursday, May 22, 2008, with loved ones by her side.

Mrs. Hayter is preceded in death by her parents A.D. and Thelma Meade Bateman and two brothers and one sister.

Darlene is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Nelson. Two sons: Randall Hayter and wife, Tamara of Leesburg, VA, and Tony Hayter and wife, Natalie of Bristol, VA; one daughter Susan Gobble of Meadowview, VA; three grandchildren, Kristen, Sarah & James. She is also survived by five brothers and three sisters, numerous nieces and nephews, and her faithful companion Sheba.

Funeral services for Darlene Hayter will be conducted on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at 2 pm in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jim Goddard officiating. Burial will follow in the Poor Valley Cemetery in Mendota. Pallbearers will be nephews. Douglas Glenn Gregory

 

Douglas Glenn Gregory, age 54, departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Saturday May 24, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  Born May 17, 1954, he was a 1973 graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Emory, Virginia and was previously a Norfolk & Western Railway employee and Pittston Coal Company employee.  A man with a generous and loving heart, he will be missed by many.

            He is survived by his father Kenneth E. Gregory, Sr. and stepmother Mary Lynn Gregory of Meadowview; his mother, Nancy E. Gregory of Abingdon; his brother, Kenneth E. Gregory, Jr. and wife Betty of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Michelle Moore and husband Ike, and Mary Sue Thomas all of Meadowview; stepbrother Robbie Davis of Abingdon; his aunts, Ernestine Gregory Davis of Roxboro, NC, Betty Gregory Medicus and husband Rags of Abingdon, Mildred Gregory Counts and daughter Caroline Levine of North Hampton, NH, and numerous more aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Todd Scott, Mandi Gregory, Dusty Harless, Cinny Gregory and Terrell Thomas, and two great nieces and one great nephew; and his best friend Alan Moore of Meadowview.

            The family will receive friends Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Tommy Wilson and Mr. Jim Pence officiating.  The committal service will be Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m.

C. J. Layne, Jr.

C. J.  Layne (Cecil Lee Layne, Jr.), age 33, died Thursday, May 22, 2008.

He was employed by Tri-City Security and was an avid animal lover.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Anna Justus and Papa John; his father Cecil Lee Layne, Sr.; his brother, Ronnie Lee Layne ; his sisters, Brenda Ellen Cox and friend Mack Milhorne  and Christi Ann Layne and friend Johnny Pace all of Abingdon, VA; a special friend, Lori Sullins of Abingdon; his cats, Trey, Precious and Cassie; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. Sunday, May 25, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with his great uncle, Rutherford Layne officiating. The burial and committal service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Monday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. A funeral  procession will leave the funeral home at 12:30 P. M. Monday. Pallbearers will be family and friends.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:45 P. M. Sunday before the funeral service.

William McKinley Nunley

William McKinley (Bill) Nunley, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 24, 2008.  Bill was born on January 25, 1915, in Washington County, Virginia, where he resided for all of his life.

Bill was the last survivor of the original Chestnut Grove Quartet which traveled and sang for over 40 years.  He was also a veteran of World War II.  Bill was a member of Chestnut Grove Community Church, where he served as trustee, Sunday School teacher, Treasurer, and choir leader for many, many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Nunley and Lydia Reynolds Nunley; his first wife, Agnes Lillian Montgomery Nunley; four brothers: Sherman Nunley, Arnold Nunley, James Nunley and Manuel Nunley; and one sister, Lottie Nunley Reynolds.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Ann Statzer Nunley; four sons: William (Billy) Nunley and wife Josie; Wade Nunley and wife Faye; Ronnie Nunley and wife Darlene; and Keith Nunley and wife Stephanie; two daughters: Wanda Nunley Taylor and husband Kenneth; and Marie Nunley Cornett and husband Jerry.  Bill was also blessed with ten wonderful grandchildren and ten wonderful great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Bill Nunley will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Chestnut Grove Community Church with Rev. Olen Cassell and Bill Reynolds officiating.  Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with military graveside rites performed by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard.  Bill’s grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of Chestnut Grove Community Church, Frankie Scott, Clifton Duncan and Earl Tignor.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Charles Columbus Barr     Video

Charles Columbus "Chris" Barr, 95, quietly passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Chilhowie, Va., Washington County, on March 28, 1913. He was the fourth child born to Sidney Columbus and Nancy Elizabeth Herron Barr and the youngest son of nine children. He attended school in Chilhowie and was a graduate of Barrack High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Rebecca Nickels of Mendota, Va.; an infant son, Jeffery Herron Barr; sisters, Lavonia Ellen Barr, Gladys Crews and Bernice Widener; and brothers, Paul Jackson Barr, Lloyd Elmer Barr and Fred Lewis Barr.
He is survived by his only child, Marcia B. Hicklin of the home; grandson, CWO2 Matthew Stuart Hicklin and wife Sindy of Petersaurach, Germany; granddaughter, Meggin Anne Hicklin of Blacksburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jessi, Jenni and Lucas Hicklin; sisters, Pauline "Polly" Bordwine of Bristol and Agnes Miller of Meadowview; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In June 1934, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Roanoke as an apprentice seaman. Following recruit training, he reported to the USS Lexington for his first tour of duty. After two years aboard that ship, he served the remaining years prior to World War II at the U.S. Naval Air Station in San Diego. At the outbreak of war, he was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier CV-5, USS Yorktown, and was serving aboard during the Battle of Midway, a strategic turning point of the war. The carrier was sunk, leaving its survivors floating for hours in the Pacific awaiting rescue. Following wartime, he served aboard the USS Saratoga and subsequent tours of duty at Jacksonville, Fla., and Guantanamo Bay. His final tour was at the Norfolk Naval Air Station, where he completed 27 years of exemplary service. During those 27 years, he was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Service Medal (with 8 stars), American Campaign Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
In 1961, having retired from the Navy, Mr. Barr and his family relocated to Bristol, where he worked briefly as a U.S. postal carrier and an employee of Raytheon Corp. In Feb. 1964, he accepted a job as deputy county treasurer for Washington County, Va., serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1986.
In 1962, Mr. Barr joined Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church, where he served in many capacities, including Sunday school superintendent, elder and trustee. He participated in numerous projects, including the planting of the boxwoods and walnut trees that now line the driveway.
For many years he was a faithful supporter of the Desert Shrine Club, the Jacksonville Scottish Rite Masonic Temple and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His greatest pleasure was the time spent in his yard, a hobby that brought him great joy, as did his political affiliation and his Atlanta Braves baseball team. He took greatest pride in his love of God and country, serving both faithfully with much devotion and integrity.
The family wishes to especially thank Wellmont Hospice, Bristol Home Health Services, Sam and Ann Dunn, Ellen James, Christi Rock, Ron Smith, Mr. Jim Counts, doctors, J. Greg Griffith, William J. Baker and nurse Belinda, James Denton, D. Nelson Gwaltney, caring neighbors, loving family and friends and special friends, Katherine Herald of Roanoke, Va., and Delores Cardwell of Granada, Miss. All enriched his life and made the journey most memorable.
A celebration of life for Charles Columbus Barr will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, at 4 p.m. at the Farris Cremation and Funeral Center in Forest Hills, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with the Rev. John Markel and the Rev. Curtis Murray of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church officiating.
Pallbearers will be Mr. Jim Counts, Mr. Albert Vance, Mr. C.R. Quesenberry, Mr. Buddy Scheerer, Mr. C.E. "Gene" Cooper, Mr. Fred Parker and Mr. Melvin Ritchie. Honorary pallbearers will be elders of the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church and members of the York Masonic Lodge.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. A private burial will follow at the Forest Hills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with military honors provided by the Highland Fellowship Veteran's Honor Guard.

Donnie McCray, Jr.

 

Mr. Donnie McCray, Jr., age 38, went to sleep with the Angels Sunday May 25, 2008.

 

Donnie lived his life in Washington County, Virginia and was an avid outdoorsman. He was a very hard working brick mason, who took much pride in his work. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

 

Donnie was preceded in death by his wife, Stacy Mink McCray and his grandparents, Russell and Virginia “Gin” Chapman and Harrison and Naomi McCray.

 

Donnie is survived by his beautiful loving daughter, Chelsea McCray, his father and mother, Donald and Carol McCray who loved him deeply, his sister, Beverly McCray Bordwine who loved him so much and a special nephew, Nick Bordwine who will miss him very much.

 

The funeral service will be 7:30 P.M. Thursday, May 29, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor John Wesley Price and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. The interment service will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens all those wishing to go to the cemetery in procession from the funeral home are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. The family will receive friends on Thursday May 29, 2008 in the funeral home from 6-7:30 P.M.

Margaret Josephine Freeman

 

Mrs. Margaret Josephine Freeman, age 81, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Freeman was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia.  She was a loving mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Freeman; her son, Bill Freeman of Meadowview; her daughters:  Patsy Roe of Abingdon; Linda Davenport and husband Edmond of Meadowview; and Mary Price and husband Kelvin of Meadowview; her grandchildren: Emily Price, Tommy Roe, Maggie Riggle, and Jodie Bryant; her great-grandchildren: Amanda Riggle, Sarah Roe, Samantha Riggle, Annie Bryant, Josh Riggle, Megan Bryant and Becky Riggle; several nieces and nephews; special friends: Eddie and Peggy Bailey; Caroline Taurus; Matt Smith and April Hamby. 

The funeral service for Mrs. Freeman will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel with Rev. William Robert Widener

William Robert Widener.  age 88, of the Widener’s Valley Community, passed away Monday, May 27, 2008 at the Bristol Nursing Home in Bristol, TN.

Born on September 16, 1919 in Washington County, VA, he was a son of the late Thomas J. Widener and Laura Virginia Mason Widener.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Denney Widener; his son, William Robert Widener, Jr. and his sister, Blanche Widener Wilson.

Before his illness, he had previously attended  Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Coy & Glenna Widener  of Glade Spring, VA; his granddaughter, Melissa Gilliam and husband Chris; his grandson, William R. Widener III; his great grandson, Joshua Gilliam; his brothers, Ben E. Widener of the  Wideners’ Valley Community and J. R. Widener of Abingdon, VA; his sisters, Catherine M. Martin of Glade Spring and Louise Roark of Abingdon, VA; a special friend and caregiver, Elizabeth Falin and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 P. M. Wednesday, May 28, 2008 in the Main  Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey. Jr. officiating. A eulogy will given by Tim Widener and music will be provided by Terry Widener. The committal and burial service will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. A procession will leave the funeral home at 3:20 P. M. Thursday for Sunset Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from  6:00 – 7:15  P. M. Wednesday before the funeral service.

Raymond McNew

Mr. Raymond McNew, age 71, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. McNew was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA.  He enjoyed the outdoors and gardening, especially working in his flower garden. Raymond delighted in his children, grandchildren and great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Newton McNew and Martha Gilley McNew; his wife, Nancy Hicks McNew; one son, Randy Wade McNew; two brothers: Billy McNew and Lee McNew; and two sisters: Ernestine Hockett and Pauline Farris.

Mr. McNew is survived by three sons: Marty Lee McNew of Bristol, VA; Michael Anthony McNew of Piney Flats, TN; and Jeffrey Lynn McNew and wife Shelly of Bristol, VA; two daughters: Donna McNew Lawless and husband Larry of Kingsport, TN, and Pamela McNew Knight and husband Steven of Piney Flats, TN; grandchildren: Jeremy Lawless, Selina and Adam Cloninger; Nikisha Lang and husband Daniel; Dylan, Devin and Davis Knight, and Landon, Rhaine and Sarah McNew; one great-grandson, Jackson Lang; six sisters: Jo Ann Casey of Blountville, TN; Margaret Walsh of Bristol, VA; Reba McCray of Washington County, VA; Oakie Litton of Meadowview, VA; Caroline Hayden of Roanoke, VA; and June McCray of Bristol, TN.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating.  Family will serve as pallbearers.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon.

Ronald Treasone Clappse

Mr. Ronald Treasone Clappse, age 72, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a retired Certified Hazardous Materials, over-the-road truck driver for Superior Tank Lines in Kingsport. Mr. Clappse was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was a member of the Knights of the Blue Nose for his service and training above the Artic Circle. He was also a member of the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Price Clappse.

Three Sons: Ronald R. Clappse and wife Linda of Bristol, TN; Donald E. Clappse of Abingdon; and Raymond Clappse and wife Allison of Abingdon.

Two Grandchildren: Brooke Ann Clappse and Joshua Clappse.

A special cousin: Larry Russell of New Smyrna Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Ronald T. Clappse will be conducted Friday, May 30, 2008 at 1:00 pm in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Pastors Howard Davis, Clifford Roark, Jr. and Mike Abel officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 29, 2008, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with military gravesite rites conducted by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Don Beach, Bill Ed Hughes, Dale Stark, Mike Abel, and members of the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard.  Honorary pallbearers will be Albert T. Blevins, Wayne Rutherford, Mike Barker, and Larry “Bud” Rowe.

Edward Dempsey Kestner

Edward Dempsey “Demp” Kestner, 81, formerly of Saltville, Virginia died Saturday, May 24, 2008 in Ashland, Virginia. Mr. Kestner was a World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Katie Surber Kestner of Ashland, Virginia; two sons, Edward “Eddie” of Hopewell, Virginia and Timothy “Tim” of Doswell, Virginia and their wives; two grandsons; Jeff of Hopewell, Virginia and Jeremy of Richmond, Virginia; three granddaughters; Shera Huddleston of Hopewell, Virginia, Lindsay of Hopewell, Virginia and Taylor of Doswell, Virginia; seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Regina Faye Keen of Chilhowie, Virginia as well as an extended family of sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 2 P.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia) with Rev. C.R. “Ross” Greer officiating. Entombent will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum located at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will have a reception in the Forest Hills Chapel following the entombment service, military honors by the Bristol V.F.W. Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends in the Forest Hills Chapel on Thursday, May 29, 2008 from 6-8 P.M.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to your favorite charity or church.

Pallbearers will be Tim Greer, Ben Francisco, Jeff Kestner, Tim Kestner, Anthony Cannon, and Jeremy Bierly.

Raymond Hearl

Mr. Raymond Hearl, 84, was united with his Lord, father and mother on May 30, 2008.

He resided in Washington County, Virginia for most of his life and will be remembered by many people for his quiet loving personality.

Raymond is preceded in death by his father and mother, George W. Hearl and Rosa Minnick Hearl one brother, James E. Hearl and one sister, Lucy Mae Warren.

Raymond is survived by brothers; Clarence Hearl and wife, Katie of Abingdon, Virginia, Eugene Hearl of Richlands, Virginia, Harry Hearl and wife, Peggy of Bristol, Virginia, George Hearl, Jr. and wife, Doris of Abingdon, Virginia. Raymond is also survived by his sisters Winnie Warren of Bristol, Virginia and Ruby Kestner and husband, Jim of Abingdon, Virginia. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Raymond Hearl will be conducted at 8 P.M. Sunday, June 1, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, Virginia) with Dr. Don Paxton officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6-8 P.M. on Sunday prior to the funeral. A private interment service will be conducted.

Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and a very special friend, Lonnie Reynolds.

The family would like to thank the 3rd floor doctors, nurses, and workers of Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Joseph S. Henderson

Joseph S. Henderson, age 79, of Palm City, Florida, died Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Florida.

He was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky and moved to Lexington, Kentucky. He was in the United States Navy. He graduated from Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky with an engineer degree. He was active in many organizations such as Shriners, Barn Theater, Sailor’s Club, Antiques Automobiles and the Old Eagle’s Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Henderson, Sr. and Mabel (Wyatt) Henderson and brother, Henry Henderson, Jr. and sisters, Virginia Pieratt and Shields Wash and step-son, Gary Henderson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Martha (Van Arsdall) Henderson; of Palm City, Florida, three sons, Kevin Henderson, J.B. Henderson, and Jon K. Henderson, step-sons, Darrell Henderson and Donald Henderson, step-daughter, Myra Pinkerman, sister, Helen Gannon and four grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospices, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, Florida 34997.

The interment will be at the Henderson Family Cemetery in Poor Valley, Virginia on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 5 P.M.
