Peyton Alexander Steffey infant son of Sarah Hash and Myron Steffey passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at their home. He was a precious and loving gift from heaven that will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Peyton is survived by his brother, Mason Steffey of the home; three sisters Taylor, Iszabella and Sarah Steffey of Abingdon; his paternal grandparents Sam and Linda Steffey of Abingdon; his maternal grandparents Calvin and Sarah Hash of Damascus and Lacy and Sarah Rogers of Bristol; great-grandparents Thelma Cannon of Abingdon, Lois Steffey of Abingdon and Opal and Tracy Hash of Damascus; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services for Peyton Alexander Steffey will be held at 8 pm, Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, 19423 Spoon Gap Rd., Abingdon, with the Rev. Greg Dingus officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Shane Steffey, Tommy Hash, Chris Thompson and Larry Rushing. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 6 pm until the time of the service.

Treva Virginia Humphrey Dillow, age 44, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2009.

She was born in Pulaski, VA and had lived in Pine Grove, PA before moving to Washington County, VA 16 years ago. She was of the Pentecostal faith and had been a member of North Fork Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by one brother, Tracy Vernon Humphrey; maternal grandparents, Joe and Kathleen Barrett; and paternal grandparents, Wiley and Ila Humphrey.

Survivors are her parents, Kermit and Christine Barrett Humphrey of Salem, AL; her daughter, Jasmine Christine Dillow of the home; brothers, Travis Vaughn Humphrey and wife, Lori of Pine Grove, PA, and Trevor Vincent Humphrey and wife, Jennifer of Salem, AL; and special friend, Roger Riley. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services for Treva Dillow will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Farris Funeral Chapel in Abingdon with Rev. Jim Cumbow officiating. Interment will follow in Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Glade Spring. Pallbearers will be Jim Bise, Tony Barrett, Cody Prater, Kim Dillow, T.J. Humphrey, and Wiley Humphrey. Teddy Ronald “Ronnie” Snead, 53, went to be with his beloved God on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born September 21, 1955 in Russell County, VA and was a son of Teddy J. and Judy M. Robins Snead of Abingdon. He attended Providence Community Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Peggy Snead; a brother, David L. Snead of Abingdon; and a special niece Megan D.

Funeral services for Ronnie Snead will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, May 9, 2009 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. John Thrasher officiating. Edward Louis Jones, 71, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  He was born and raised in Washington County a son of the late Dave and Georgianna Wright Jones.  He worked as a cook in a hospital in New Jersey throughout his adult life and retired back home to Washington County 15 years ago.  He was a member and deacon of Valley Street Baptist Church in Abingdon.  He loved to cook and was an avid fan of wrestling.  He had a gift to make people smile. 

            He is survived by 1 daughter, Theadisher “Dee Dee” Ivery of Mont Clair, NJ; 1 granddaughter, Londisher Ford of Atlanta, GA; 3 brothers, Donald Jones of Mesa, AZ, David Jones of Lexington, KY, and Michael Jones of Blountville; 3 sisters, Geraldine Lampkins of Emory, Nellie J. Foster of Abingdon, and Marie Smith of Hartford, CT.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Street Baptist Church with the Rev. William Austin officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Mrs. Audrey Lucille Mitchell, age 81 passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 5, 1927 in Washington, County, VA.

She was a member of the Brumley Gap United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, James Mitchell and her son-in-law, Bernard Tignor.

 

Survivors include her sons, James R. Mitchell and wife, Leola, Saltville, VA and Michael W. Mitchell and wife, Judy, Abingdon, VA, her daughter, Evelyn J. Tignor, Abingdon, VA, her sisters, Retha Keith, Abingdon, VA, Louise Corbett, Monterey, VA, Levonda Alexander, Abingdon, VA, seven grandchildren, Travis Mitchell, Jonathan Mitchell, Jeff Tignor, Jamie Tignor, Todd Mitchell, Chad Mitchell and Candice Deel and spouses  and ten great grandchildren.

 

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Rev. Larry Linkous officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Harry Graham Jessee, Sr.

 

Harry Graham Jessee, Sr., age 80 passed away Friday, May 15, 2009 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

 

He was born and raised in Russell County, Virginia and had lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mayford Nannie Jessee, two brothers, Fred William Jessee and Carl Russell Jessee.  He retired from Home Beneficial Insurance Company with twenty years of service. 

 

He loved the outdoors, especially fishing.  He was a Christian.

 

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Harry Carlton Jessee and Shawnee Jessee, Abingdon, VA, a sister, Margaret Sims, Richlands, VA, two grandchildren, Kansas Jessee and Santanna Jessee.

 

A graveside service will be conducted Monday, May 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Garrett Cemetery, Route 700, Abingdon, VA with Reverend Kenneth Widner officiating.

 

There will no visitation in the funeral home.

 

Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m.

Ruth Irene Moore, was born February 2, 1927 and passed away May 17, 2009 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Elizabeth Parris, her husband, Dayton Moore, a daughter, Shirley Akers, a son, James “Dan” Moore and a daughter-in-law, Dana Moore, three sisters and a brother.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph “Donnie” Moore and Peggy Moore, Abingdon, VA, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, two sisters and three brothers.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 4:00 p.m, in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Interment will follow. 

Her wishes is that there will no visitation at the funeral home.  Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 3:55 p.m.

Peggy “Bobbie” Joyce Tate, 75, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

She was born December 30, 1933 in Havaco, West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Charles “Buck” Leonard and Hester Dickens Pendergrass. She graduated from Big Creek High School in War, WV in 1951 and had made her home in Washington County for the past 39 years after moving here from District Heights, Maryland.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jackson Tate; brothers, Bill, Jim, and Ray Pendergrass; and a sister, Frances Pendergrass Hazlett.

Survivors are daughters, Sharon Tate Hoskins of Abingdon and Christi Dawn Fowler and husband, Will of Fayetteville, NC; son, Thomas Jackson Tate, Jr. and fiancée, Ashley Montgomery of Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Ashley Tate of Knoxville, TN, Jack and Nikkie Foster of Johnson City, TN, Mike and Melissa Foster of Jonesborough, TN, Matthew Grossman of Battle Creek, MI, and Jeremy Grossman of New Mexico; eight great-grandchildren; and special friends, Jamie Arnold and Joy and Hal Strata. Also surviving are all her friends and special family at Chick-N-Little Restaurant.

Edward “Eddie” Garland Widener, 57, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009.

He was born December 8, 1951 and was a son of the late William Garland and Elizabeth Widener. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and camp. He was a great brother and he especially loved all his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters, Angela Karen Vanhoozer, Janice Murray Widener, and Nancy Josephine Combs.

Survivors are sisters, Joyce Hawkins and Jennifer Widener both of Chilhowie, VA; brothers, William “Bear” Ralph Widener and Charles “Mike” Widener both of Glade Spring, VA and James Clifton Widener and wife, Chandra and Danny Gail Widener and wife, Alma both of Saltville, VA; and special friends of the family, Russell, Ed, and Susie Howell. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and one great niece and two great nephews.

Funeral services for Eddie Widener will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Sunday, May 24, 2009 in Farris Funeral Chapel with Wade Jackson officiating. Charles E. Bailey, Sr., 85, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009 at his home.  He was a native of Bluefield, West Virginia and had lived most of his life in Meadowview.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.  He retired from Appalachian Power Company after 36 years of service.  He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ryan Bailey; his son, Charles E. “Eddie” Bailey, Jr. and wife Peggy; his daughter, Connie Mann and husband Buddy; 2 grandsons, Justin Mann and Chris Mann; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery with the Rev. David Jackson officiating.  Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Survivors include his mother Ethel Edwards Dickey; two sons Josh Dickey of Grundy, VA, and Aaron Dickey of Delaware; one daughter, Brittany Dickey, Grundy, VA; one brother Anthony Dickey, Abingdon, VA; seven sisters, Gaynell Johnson and her husband Troy of Abingdon, VA, Brenda Crabtree and her husband Dickie of Richlands, VA, Linda Endicott and husband Kenney, Rural Retreat, VA, Rita Willis and her husband Mike of Lakeland, FL, Kathy Ward of Bristol, VA, Debbie Marrs and her husband Dean of Richlands, VA, Tammy Dickey and Tony Witt of Stanton, VA; 37 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 2 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Matthew Daniels officiating. Virginia Snodgrass Johnson    View Tribute Site    View Video

Virginia Faye Snodgrass Johnson, age 94, died peacefully at her home on May 27, 2009. She was the widow of the late James Gibson Johnson.  She was born on April 10, 1915, in the Friendship community of Washington County, to the late Moses Lafayette and Joella McKee Snodgrass.

She was a graduate of Liberty Hall High School, attended Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) and was a 1936 graduate of Emory & Henry College. During her teaching career, she taught at the one-room school of Friendship, and at Damascus and Liberty Hall Elementary Schools and Meadowview High School.

A descendent of most of the original settlers of the area, she had lived in the Lodi community all of her life. She was known for her love of the history and her knowledge of the area. She was a long time member of the Historical Society of Washington County.

As one of the early 4-H members of the county, she later served as a 4-H leader, and was a longtime member, leader and officer of the Friendship Home Demonstration Club and the Washington County Extension Homemakers Council.

She was a former member of the Abingdon Garden Club, the Washington County Republican Women’s Club, and the Anna Stonewall Chapter of the U.D.C. For many years, she was active in the local, state and national chapters of the Rural Letter Carriers Association Auxiliary and traveled all over the United States to meetings of the National Rural Letter Carrier Association.

She was a 69 year member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and had assisted her late husband in the moving of the Parson Cummings Cabin to the church cemetery property.

She is survived by her daughters Joella Johnson Barbour of Glade Spring, and Sylvia Jeanne Johnson of Elkins, WV, and her son James McKee Johnson of Glade Spring; grandsons: Benjamin Gibson Barbour, Richmond, VA; William Bertram, Jenner McKee, and Charles David Corey Johnson, all of Glade Spring; granddaughters: Margaret Barbour Williams (John H.) of  Brunswick, GA, and Lauralee Brooke Johnson of  New York City; two great-grandsons: Jackson McGuire and Keegan Gibson Williams; and a former son-in-law, the Reverend Edwin Benjamin Barbour of Axton, VA. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Louise Snodgrass Francis and Marjorie Snodgrass Snodgrass, and by her teenage brother, William McKee Snodgrass.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday, May 29, 2009, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Reverend Timothy Bird officiating. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.  Pallbearers will be Mrs. Johnson’s grandsons and nephews Henry S. Snodgrass, Jr., Albert M. (Bert) Snodgrass, James S. Johnson and David S. Johnson. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 28, 2009, from 6-8 pm at the funeral home.  Friends may also call at the home of Mac and Kathy Johnson, 36093 Kelly Chapel Road, Glade Spring, VA.

Edgar F. Logan    View Tribute Site

Edgar F. Logan, 92, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  He was a lifelong resident of Washington County whose passion and hobby was farming.  He was a former employee of Pet Milk Company with 22 years of service.  He was a member and former Sunday school teacher of Blackwell Chapel United Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by 5 brothers.

            He is survived by his wife, Sarah “Nettie” Logan; his son, Roger Logan and wife Jeanette of Abingdon; his granddaughter, Kathy Logan of San Diego, CA; and 1 great granddaughter, Emily Talerman.

             The funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 29, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Scott Spence officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 6:00 p.m.

            The committal service will be Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.  Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Thelma Boyd Baldwin Hagy    View Tribute Site

Mrs. Thelma Boyd Baldwin Hagy, age 98, died Friday, May 29, 2009.

Mrs. Hagy was a native of Russell County, VA, the daughter of the late George and Sallie Wallace Boyd of Honaker, VA.  She was a graduate of Honaker High School and Radford University.  She was a primary teacher in the Russell County School System, having taught 47 years, retiring in 1976 and moving to Abingdon.

Mrs. Hagy was a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church, Mary Martha Sunday School Class and the Brenda Hallock Circle.  She was a Delta Kappa Gamma Society member.  She loved her church, people, crafts, gardening and flowers.  She could best be described as a person who gave unconditionally to others.  Her love and dedication to her family will live on.

She was the widow of her first husband Arda P. Baldwin and the second husband, Ralph Hagy and was also preceded in death by brothers, Stanley Boyd, John Boyd and wife Martha Fay Boyd.

Survivors included three step-sons, Dr. William Baldwin, Washington, DC, James A. Baldwin, Abingdon, VA, Richard Hagy, Bristol, VA; a step-daughter, Connie Counts, Abingdon, VA,

four nieces, Mary Katherine Jackson, Honaker, VA, Margaret Ann Ratliff, Lebanon, VA, Betty Loraine Smith, Vienna, VA, Donna Bostic, Honaker, VA, two nephews, Dr. Arthur Boyd, Kingsport, TN, Keith Boyd, Bristol, VA, four granddaughters, Shannon Baldwin, Boston, Massachusetts, Daphne Marineck, Mars, PA, Theresa Halsey, Abingdon, VA, Tina Counts, Richmond, VA, two step-grandsons, Tommy Counts, Alexandria, VA, Jesse Baldwin, Connecticut and several great nieces and nephews, among other surviving in-laws are Erma Boyd, Tom Counts, Carl Jackson, Kathi Boyd, Debbie Boyd, Chris Halsey, Mike Marineck, Kathy Baldwin, Franklin Ratliff, Stewart Smith.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, June 1, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Reverend John Thrasher officiating.

Interment will follow on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon, VA.  Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Boyd, Lynn Jackson, Stephen Jackson, Kevin Bostic, Jake Lowe and Jesse Baldwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Andrew Rhinehart, Dr. Fred Slaughter, Charles Meade, Kenneth Johnson, Buddy Carrier, Jim Jones, Johnny Crigger, Charles Grogan, Curtis Burkett, Ray Eskew, Jerry Belisle and Scott Compton.

Flowers will be accepted, but the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Abingdon Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 361 W. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Home.
