Adeline Kingery Moore

Mrs. Adeline Kingery Moore, 92 passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Franklin County, Virginia and moved to this area in 1952 from Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Radford College, a retired teacher with the Washington County School System, a member of the Linda Rice Circle, the Holston Hills Extension Club and her friends bridge club, a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter P. Kingery and Mary Ella Hudson Kingery, her husband, Chester H. Moore, a son, Chester Kingery Moore, a brother, Charles F. Kingery and a sister, Emma Lee Renick, a sister-in-law, Fern Moore.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Ann Young, and Jane Hudson Waters both of Abingdon, VA, two brothers, William R. Kingery and wife Catherine and Walter P. Kingery, Jr., and wife Diane all of Rocky Mount, VA, a daughter-in-law, Barbara Moore, Murrell’s Inlet, SC, a sister-in-law, Berta Moore, Wirtz, VA, five grandsons, Roy P. “JR” Young, San Diego, CA, Mark Moore, Kinnelon, NJ, Patrick Moore, Chicago, IL, Trey Waters, Southern Pines, NC, Jason Waters, Birmingham, AL two great-granddaughters, Lena Moore, Kinnelon, NJ and D’Juna Moore, Chicago, IL, several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Abingdon Baptist Church. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2008 in the Abingdon Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Interment will follow on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in the Franklin County Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

Gaye Easterly

Mrs. Gaye Easterly, age 89, passed away on November 5, 2008, at her home. She had lived in Abingdon for the past 63 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank Easterly, Jr. and her sister, Faye VanDyke.

Gaye was born in Russell County to the late Hobert and Lockie Meade Owens. She taught school in Washington, Wythe and Russell Counties. She loved to read. She was a wonderful cook and a care taker for many.

Survivors include her daughter Kittye Owens and husband Charles, Bristol, VA; two granddaughters, Angie Owens and husband Dwight, Bristol, TN, and Pam Clements and husband Benjamin, Germantown, TN; five great-grandchildren, Abby Owens, Caroline Clements, Owen Clements, Ethan Owens, and Rebecca Clements; one brother Bill Owens and wife Barbara, Abingdon, VA and their daughters Terry and Karen; one brother-in-law, Sam VanDyke, Abingdon, VA; one sister-in-law Jane Murph and husband Bob, Kingsport, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Gaye Easterly will be held on Friday, November 7, 2008, at 8:00 pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jim Goddard and Rev. Amy Bartee officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:45 pm prior to the service.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to be at the cemetery by 10:50 am. Pallbearers will be Dwight Owens, Benjamin Clements, Bill Webster, Bill Easterly, Larry Thomas, Bob Boatwright, and Guy Warner. Honorary pallbearers will be Betty Gentry and Betty Webster. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Maudie G. Street

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13.

Maudie G. Street, age 85, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008.  Wife, mother, grandma and friend, Maudie G. Street, was the description of love. She lived her life to serve others, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things and enduring all things. (I Corinthians 13:7).   She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. 

Born October 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harve and Matilda O’Quinn. She was also preceded in death by husband Link M Street and first husband Clair Rowe; children Sue Rowe Loflin, Joan Rowe Keen, Rufus (Buck) and wife, Anna (Sis) Rowe; infant daughter Marie Rowe; sisters Myrtle Jackson, Lacy Compton and Dollie Sisk; brothers Roley O’Quinn and Tivis O’Quinn; step-children Betty Jo Street, Jerry Street and Wanda Owens.

She is survived by her daughter Gay Rowe of Abingdon, VA; sons Harold Rowe and wife Lilo, of Bristol, TN, and Denny Rowe and wife Barbara, of Abingdon, VA; one half-sister, Bonnie McGhee of Oregon; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

The funeral service for Maudie G. Street will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Reverend Ronnie Matney and Ancil Childress officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. prior to the service Thursday evening.  The committal service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Those planning to attend the graveside service may meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.  Pallbearers will be grandsons and family members. 

 

 

 

Muncy L. Canter

Muncy L. Canter, age 78, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at his home.

Born on December 12, 1929 in Washington County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Ernest Canter and Sarah Horton Canter.  He attended Victory Baptist Church in Bristol and had previously lived in Lubbock, Texas before he and his wife moved back to the Bristol area.  While living in Texas, he had worked as a machinist  for several years before his retirement.

Survivors include his loving wife Geneva Wilson Canter; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Marshall McWilliams of Medina, TX; his brother, Clint Canter of Chilhowie, VA; his sisters, Lacy Mae Grogan and Nancy Jane Smith both of Bristol, VA; four grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, November 10, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Dr. Austin Cook and Rev. Eddie Crusenberry officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral service. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum  at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

 

 

Sue Ratcliffe Powers

Sue Powers, age 75, passed away from this life to be with her Lord on November 8, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mattie Ratcliffe; her sisters Mary, Annie, Hazel and Gayle. Sue was of the Baptist faith having accepted Jesus into her heart and life many years ago.

Sue is survived by her husband Leo Powers and her nephew Bobby Lester.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 – 7:45 P. M. Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will follow at 8:00 P. M. with Brother Van Seal and Brother Pat Gilbert officiating.  The committal and burial service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Tuesday in Mount Rose Cemetery  in Glade Spring, VA. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the service Tuesday are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Patel, Dr. Cowan and Dr. Henry for their care that they showed Sue.  Thanks are also extended to  the many friends and neighbors who have been so kind and  also to her caregivers Cheri, Dee and Janie. The family  wishes  as well to remember and thank the staff of Valley Health Care Center and her hospice nurses for their care and support.

Walter Stacy

Walter Stacy, age 84, carpenter extraordinaire, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the home of his daughter Gwinda Mullins following a brief illness.

Born on April 26, 1924 in Paynesville, WV, Walter was a son of the late  Charlie Stacy and Pattie Church Stacy. His maternal grandparents were the late  Wiley and Victoria Church of Paynesville, WV. He was raised by his paternal grandparents the late John R. And Katherine Stacy also of Paynesville, WV.

Walter was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was currently attending the Macedonia Church of Christ in Abingdon. Walter was much loved and respected in  his community. After becoming disabled as a coal miner with Jewel Ridge Coal Corp., he became a carpenter by trade, building not only furniture and homes, but a strong foundation for his family and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sarah Jane Kennedy Stacy (2005); his lovely daughter, Linda June Stacy (1989); his sisters Erma Boze, Chloe and Francis Stacy; his brothers Willard, Edward and England Stacy and his step-brother, Burl Stacy.

Walter is survived by his children, Gwinda Sue Mullins of Abingdon, VA; Lois Ann Mitchem of Riverview, FL, Donna Gay Kramb of Catlett, VA and Danny Ray Stacy of Gordonsville, VA; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; his sisters, Bessie Keene of Richlands, VA and Flora Vickers of Goodwater, AL.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:45 P. M. Tuesday , November 11, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.  A funeral service will follow at 7:00 P. M. with  Pastors Ronnie Musick and Hobert Kennedy officiating. A graveside committal and burial service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Thursday, November 13, 2008 in Stafford Memorial Park in  Stafford, Virginia with Pastor Bill Bates officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial donations to be made to the  Autism Society of America,7910 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 300, Bethesda, MD 20814-3067.

Richard Grayson Swafford

Mr. Richard Grayson Swafford, age 67, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Virginia.

Richard was born in Copperhill, TN and was a son of the late Richard R. Swafford and Euna Mae Davis Swafford. He was also preceded in death by his brother Steve. Richard had lived and worked in Cleveland, TN before moving to the Abingdon, VA area in September. He was a U. S. Army Veteran, having served for 8 years.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Angie & Stanley Haynes of Abingdon, VA; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jr. & Teresa Swafford of Chattanooga, TN; his brother and sister-in-law, Randy & Joyce Swafford; his grandchildren, Joshua Haynes, Bethanie Haynes and Hannah Swafford and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring Richard’s life will be held at 2:00 P. M. Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in the Cochran, Fitch & Henry Funeral Home Chapel in McCaysville, GA (706-492-3321). Military honors will be provided by the local honor guard in McCaysville.

Irma Louise McCune

Mrs. Irma Louise McCune, 82, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Johnston  Memorial Hospital.  She was a native of Pennsylvania, lived most of her life in Ohio, and had lived in Abingdon for the last 10 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd McCune in 1992.  She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Chilhowie.  She spent a lot of her time as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital and as a member of Wolf Hills Quilters.  She was a retired registered nurse with 45 years of service.

            She is survived by 2 sons; David McCune and wife Juanita of North Manchester, Indiana, and Pat McCune and wife Susie of Meadowview; 1 brother, Charles Lowmaster of Ohio; 3 sisters, Ethel Rae Naff of Virginia, Maxine McCune of Georgia, and Janet DeLARiva of Pennsylvania; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. 

A graveside funeral service will be held in Pennsylvania, and a memorial service will be conducted in Chilhowie at a later date.

William Morgan Dyess

William Morgan Dyess, 68, a resident of Abingdon died Monday, November 10, 2008.

He was born in New York, New York and was a son of the late William B. and Mary Morgan Dyess. Though born in New York, he spent most of his life in Northern Virginia before moving to Abingdon five years ago. He served his country from 1959 until 1965 with the United States Marine Corps and had retired from a career working insurance claims with Aetna and SWS Insurance Services. He enjoyed woodworking, building model ships, and target shooting. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James B. Dyess

Survivors are his wife, Danie M. Compton Dyess, and sister, Frances Dyess Rodgers and husband, William S. Rodgers of Brentwood, Tennessee.

A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, November 14, 2008 at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee with Highlands Veteran’s Honor Guard conducting military honors. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00pm Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia.

John Turner Cook, Jr.

John Turner Cook, Jr., age 65, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at    after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Russell County, Virginia, to the late J. Turner Cook Sr., and Margaret Harrison Cook.  He was grandson to Smith and Gertie Cook and Ezra and Lucinda Harrison.  He was also preceded in death by a wife, Brenda Roark Cook, and by his twin brothers, Leonard Cook and Lester Cook.

John was of the Christian faith.  He always went the extra mile to assure the less fortunate children had Christmas dinners and toys.  He will always be remembered for his unique way of making everyone around him laugh with his witty remarks and jokes.

He retired from the US Department of Agriculture in 1994 after having spent 26 years as a meat inspector, twenty years of which he was stationed at Valleydale of Bristol.  During this time he received numerous awards for superior performance.

Survivors include his wife since June 14, 2008, Marie Riley Cook of the home; one daughter, Kimberly Dawn and husband Terry Peige of Abingdon; two sons: John T. Cook III and wife Mary of Abingdon, and Gregory Wayne Cook and wife Penny of Abingdon; two granddaughters: Santanna Cook of Bristol, TN, and Margaret Cook of Abingdon; one step-daughter, Jessica Riley of Bristol, Virginia and one step-son, Travis Riley of Damascus; two step-grandsons: William Riley and Eric Nooncester; a step-granddaughter, Alexis Williams; two sisters: Shirley Johnson of Roanoke, VA, and Linda Spiva and husband Ern of Huddleston, VA; three brothers: Frank S. Cook and wife Beulah of  Blountville, Tennessee ; Robert Cook and wife Fay of Bulls Gap, TN, and Benjamin J. Cook and wife Margaret of Roanoke; a close friend he often referred to as his “other daughter”, Heather Wakefield, and two little neighbors who think of him as an extra PawPaw, Meadow and Landon Shelton.

The funeral service for John T. Cook, Jr., will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul White officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home prior to the service.  Pallbearers will be nephews Anthony Cook, Christopher Cook, Darren Cook, Mark Cook, Richard Cook, Benny Cook, Ronnie and Jay Spiva.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Cook and retired and former Valleydale employees, his “working buddies.”

The committal service and burial will be Friday, November 14, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens

 

 

Katherine L. Ritter

Katherine L. Ritter, age 62, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. She passed away at her home.

Katherine was born September 17, 1946 in Bristol and was the daughter of the late Charles and Ester Hartsock Tate of Bristol. She was a member of Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church. She was employed at Trav-a-lite of Bristol for 26 years.

She was survived by her wonderful husband of 44 years, Daniel W. Ritter; daughter, Cathy Newland and husband Robert Newland of Bristol, VA; son, Allen W. Ritter of Bristol, VA; daughter Becky Poore and husband Chad Poore of Abingdon, VA; four granddaughters: Stephanie Miller and husband Adam Miller, Laura Newland, Chloe Ritter and Carrington Hobbs; two grandsons: Cameron Ritter and Christopher Hobbs; one great-grandson, Caleb Miller; two sisters: Rose Stratton and husband, Tom Stratton of Hiltons, VA, and Janie Reed of Washington, DC; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 1 pm at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Pallbearers will be Chad Poore, Robert Newland, Adam Miller, Steven Perrigan, Luke Blankenship, and Richard Leonard. James Hubert Watts

James Hubert Watts, 48, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008.

He was born in Covington, Virginia and was preceded in death by his father, John “Mac” Watts.

James was an avid outdoorsman and loved entertaining and cooking.  He was formerly employed with the United Company and the Martha Washington Inn.

Survivors include his wife, Drema Watts, Abingdon, VA, his mother, Mildred Spitler Watts, Covington, VA, his uncles, Horace Watts, Glen Allen, VA, Fred L. Watts, Wilmington, Delaware, his aunt, Eloise Bowers, Albuquerque, NM, special friends, Richard Dunn, Roanoke, VA, Doug Pritchard, Bristol, VA and Gary Carty, Kingsport, TN.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, VA with Pastor Bill Edmonds officiating. 

The family will receive friends Friday, November 14, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Geneva McCormick

Mrs. Geneva “Polly” McCormick, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Washington County on July 7, 1928 to the late Mack and Lydia Bare Kelly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adelbert “Delbert” McCormick, and by her brothers, Donald Watson Kelly and Orville Kelly. 

Mrs. McCormick was of the Baptist faith and had worked twenty-five years with Virginia Department of Transportation.  She loved flowers, and she enjoyed going on rides through the Meadowview area, watching Wheel of Fortune, and eating candy.

Survivors include her great-nephew, Donnie Kelly, and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.  The family offers special thanks to her caregiver, Tammie Helton.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Geneva “Polly” McCormick will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2008, at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Barbara Farmer officiating.  Those planning to attend the service may meet at the cemetery by 12:50.  There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home, but friends may come by to sign the guest register.

Harry V. Quesenberry

Harry V. Quesenberry, 73, of Abingdon, Virginia died Friday, November 7, 2008.

He was born in Rariton, Illinois and was the son of the late Draper and Nancy Farris Quesenberry. He had spent a good deal of his life helping his father on the family farm. He also liked to ‘coon hunt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Survivors are a brother, Clinton Quesenberry and wife, Martha of Niota, Illinois; and four sisters, Mae Scott of California, Mary Greene of Winter Springs, Florida, Marge Wilde of Sun City West, Arizona, and Ruby Crabill of Mt. Zion, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Services for Mr. Quesenberry will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2008 at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee.

Hazel Orfield

Mrs. Hazel Ruth Orfield, 87, of Meadowview, Virginia passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008 at her home.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late, Thomas Clifton and Lola Broyles Thayer. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Meadowview and was very active with and loved her work as mission coordinator there. She was an artist and enjoyed painting. She also liked reading and writing, but most of all she loved her home and her family. She was also known for her famous apple pie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Edward, James Lewis, and William Howard Thayer.

Survivors are her husband of 68 years, Harry W. Orfield; her children, Duane Orfield and wife, Elizabeth of Bristol, Virginia, Glenn Orfield and wife, Barbara of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Conley Orfield of Meadowview, Linda Crane and husband, Phil of Glade Spring, Virginia, Gail Orfield and wife, Gayle Ann of Vancleve, Mississippi, and Mark Orfield and wife, Suzanne of Meadowview; three brothers, Garland Thayer and wife, Jean of Limestone, Tennessee, Donald Thayer and wife, Eleanor of Abingdon, and Kyle Thayer and wife, Judy of Hopewell, Virginia; one sister, Ellaree Thayer of Abingdon; sister-in-law, Clara Musick Thayer of Brisol, Tennessee; twenty six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Orfield will be conducted at 3:00pm Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Abingdon. Interment will follow in the Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will be pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00pm until the time of the service on Sunday.

Malissa Stoots Plott

Mrs. Malissa Stoots Plott, 82, of Green Spring Road, went to be with the Lord on November 14, 2008 at her home.

She was a native of Lebanon, Virginia and had lived in Abingdon for the past 18 years. Malissa belonged to the Abingdon United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesley Bible Class and the United Methodist Women. She graduated from Lebanon High School and Steed College, and attended the University of Tennessee. She was a member of the Abingdon Order of the Eastern Star and a Kentucky Colonel. Malissa retired as an Administrative Officer with the Tennessee Valley Authority.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvan B. Plott; her parents, Kemper and Grace Stoots; and brothers, Thurman (Coon) and Scottie Stoots; and her sister Nadine, wife of the late Raymond Hess.

Survivors include her sisters, Shirley, wife of Donald Cook of Abingdon, and Christine, widow of Donald Compton of Lebanon; one niece, Sondra, wife of Larry Massie of Buckingham, Virginia; four nephews, Bryan Cook, Darrell Stoots, Paige Stoots, and Kemper Hess; and special friend, Bill Fuller of Abingdon.

Funeral services for Mrs. Malissa Plott will be conducted at 8:00pm Sunday, November 16, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Walter Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 7:45pm Sunday.

A graveside service will then be held at 11:00am Monday, November 17, 2008 at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the graveside service may assemble at Farris Funeral Service by 10:00am Monday in order to go in procession. Pallbearers will be Vic Taylor, Doyle Boothroy, Frank Blair, Steve Buston, Roger Edwards, and Eddie Jonas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Members of the Wesley Sunday Bible Class.

Francis Edward Smith

Francis Edward Smith (BUS), 101, died November 9, 2008.  He was born in Marlinton, W. Va., to Zed S. and Annie Maria Smith.  His education was from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. and Yale University as a civil engineer.  He was a hospital administrator at Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands, Va. and at the Grundy Hospital in Grundy, Va. during the years from 1952 to 1966.  He was a board member and director of the Virginia Hospital Association and regional director of the Academy of Medical Directors.  He retired in 1973. 

He and his wife retired to the mountains of North Carolina and later moved to Virginia Beach to live in June 1987.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Lee Izler Smith of Virginia Beach, Va.; three children, Stephen Smith and wife, Roberta of Staunton, Va., Sara S. Jones and husband, Howard E. Jones of Va. Beach and M. Sherry Hurt and husband, Ron Hurt of Glade Spring, Va.; five grandchildren, W.N. Massie of Los Angeles, Calif., Lisa S. Coleman of Barboursville, Va., Kent Massie of Va. Beach, Emmy Rusyniak of Richmond and Cabell Massie of Hampton; and one great-grandchild, Cole Massie of Los Angeles, Calif.

He served his country in World War II in the Navy.

A family graveside service will be held in the family cemetery in Marlinton, W. Va.  Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling the arrangements.

Lucy Novella Bailey

Mrs. Lucy Novella Bailey, 83, was carried to Heaven on November 19, 2008 by the angels that had been encamped around her bedside during a brief illness.

She was born in Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Annie Frances Dinkins. She was a devoted member of Midway Church of the Living God, Wyndale, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Bailey.

She will be sorely missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Bobby Lloyd of Abingdon; her grandson, Chris “Turtle” Lloyd of Abingdon; and a truly extraordinary friend, J.D. Mitchell who helped to make her life a joy every day. Also left behind are too many wonderful friends to count.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Bailey will be conducted at 2:00pm Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor David Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. Pallbearers will be Bobby Lloyd, Chris Lloyd, Dell Greenman, Kenneth Wolfe, Craig South, Glen Bowman, and Jacob Rock. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men of Midway Church of the Living God.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 12:00pm (noon) until 1:45pm Saturday.

Clyde Allen Widner

Mr. Clyde Allen Widner, age 61,  a resident of the Denton’s Valley Community of Washington County, VA, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.

Clyde was  born on March 19, 1947 in Washington County and was a son of the late Woodrow and Blanche Widner. He was also preceded in death by his brothers William Robert Widner, Wintford “Wimpy” Widner  and twin infant brothers Dwight and Dwayne Widner.

He is survived by his brothers and their spouses, Cliff & Barbara Widner, Franklin & Carol Widner  of Bristol, TN; Dean & Betty Snyder of Shady Valley, TN; David & Carol Widner, Mac & Tammy Widner; Gene Roberts & Sally McClure, Dean & Bonnie Wilson, Donald Wright, Charlie Wright, Gary Bebber & Kathy Fritz, Timmy Fritz and Randy Fritz all of Abingdon, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Clyde was a brother  and uncle to some, but in many ways, he was a father to all.

A  graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 P. M. Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Greenwood Cemetery in the Alvarado Community with Pastor Junior Gobble officiating. Burial will follow the service. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 P. M. Sunday. Pallbearers will be Donald Wright, Cecil Widner, Gene Roberts, Larry Bebber, Donald Bebber, Tony Bebber, Dean Wilson and Randy Fritz. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Wright, Oscar Widner, Tony Widner, Dean Snyder and Jessie Roe.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Hassel Jones

Mr. Hassel Jones, 85, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  He was born in Creston, North Carolina to the late Lonzie E. and Lula Price Jones.  He attended church at Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church and North Fork Baptist Church.  He enjoyed singing in churches throughout the area with his wife.  He was preceded in death by his wife Stella Neal Jones.  Mr. Jones enjoyed working throughout his life as a farmer.

            He is survived by his daughter, Dianna C. Jackson of Bristol, VA.; two granddaughters, Norma Meade of Abingdon and Dana Lynn Counts of Bristol, TN.; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Lee Meade and William Zachary Meade; one great-great-grandson Cooper Lee Meade; and one loving niece, Wanda Moore of Abingdon.

            A graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 24, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in Mountain View Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. Herbert Bailey and the Rev. Clifford Roark officiating.  The family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 – 12:30 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service prior to the graveside service.

            Pallbearers will be Jeremy Meade, Zack Meade, Charles Counts, Paul Harless, Wayne Harless, and Steve Harris.

Gladys A. Friesland

Mrs. Gladys A. Friesland, age 87, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2008, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon.  She was a lifelong resident of Abingdon and was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam Andrews and Belle Blevins Andrews; her husband, Arthur Friesland; her son, Jerry Friesland; her brother, Rex Andrews; and her sister, Nell Johnson.

Mrs. Friesland is survived by her granddaughters, Beth Newman and husband Drew of Texas, and Traci Friesland of Florida; four great-grandchildren; her niece, Anna Belle Poe and husband Boyd of Abingdon; her nephews, Troy Johnson and John E. Johnson, both of Abingdon; and several other nieces and nephews; four special friends: Bess Orr, Ruth Roberts, Doris Buchanan, and Lucille Pierce; and staff of Westhaven Retirement Living and Grace Healthcare.

The funeral service for Mrs. Gladys Friesland will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.  Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service.

Arlene Rogers Park

Mrs. Arlene Rogers Park, age 100, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Arlene lived 88 years in Lithonia, GA, before moving to Washington County 11 years ago. She was a life-long member of Lithonia Methodist Church, where she served as the church organist for 20 years. She was active in the UMC Ladies Ministry and participated in several bible studies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Alonzo Park, Jr.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Dodl and husband Norman of Abingdon, VA; three grandchildren, Janet Atwell and husband Chuck of Charlotte, NC., Louise Shankle and husband Eddie of Abingdon, VA, and Kenneth Dodl and wife Darla of Virginia Beach, VA; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Arlene Rogers Park will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 12:00 pm at Henry Funeral Home, 6833 Church Street, Lithonia GA, (770) 482-4411. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until the time of the service.

Geneva Agnes Canter

Geneva Agnes Canter, 72, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2008 in Bristol, Tennessee.

Born on March 20, 1936, she was the daughter of the late, Bill and Crede Cox Wilson. She attended Victory Baptist Church in Bristol and had previously lived in Lubbock, Texas before she and her late husband, Muncy Canter, moved back to the Bristol area. Mrs. Canter enjoyed painting ceramics as well as other arts and crafts.

Surviving are daughter, Sandra McWilliams and husband, Marshall of Medina, Texas; her brother, James K. Wilson and wife, Brenda of Bristol, Virginia; four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Geneva Canter will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Friday, November 28, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens)  with Rev. Eddie Crusenberry officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel from 3:00pm until the time of the funeral service. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Maurine Mann

Maurine W. Mann passed away Thursday, November 27, 2008 in her sleep and what a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving at Jesus’ table.

She was the daughter of Bernard and Martha Webb, born in Washington County on July 7, 1924.  She taught in the Washington County School System for many years and worked at the original Cumbow China Shop.  She was greatly loved by her many students and will be missed.  She always wanted to make sure each child had food.  She was known for her homemade biscuits, sharing her garden vegetables, flowers and the love she had for her family which was always in her conversation.  In later years, her health has failed, and she loved to ride with Richard to pick up scrap metals.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Richard J. Mann; a daughter, known as the “One and Only”, Frances Ann Thacker and gentleman friend, James Ball; two grandsons, John Thacker and wife Amy Thacker and Daryll Thacker and wife Sherry Thacker; four great-grandchildren: Kayla, Conrad, McKenzie and Madison, all of Abingdon, VA; one very special young friend, Cody Ball; one brother, Cecil Webb of Bristol, TN; special sisters-in-law: JoAnn Hurley and Hassie Webb. She is also survived by others that were always by her side: Dot Hagy, Barbara Price, Ben DeBord family, Wayne Rutherford, Victor Gomez, Linda Jones, Tom and Sally Scott, Mark Farris, Sue Castle and Nancy Kiser.

The funeral service for Mrs. Mann will be conducted Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. William Austin and Rev. David Critcher officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Wayne Rutherford, Victor Gomez, Eddie McConnell, Johnny Hurley, Jeff Hagy, Kenny Rowe, Clarence Tedder, and Tommy Scott.  Honorary pallbearers will be C. W. Harris, Wayne Price, Cecil Holmes, June and David Miller, Glenn and Larry Wise, employees of Yarber Brothers Tire and Empire Ford Garage, Ronnie, Betty and Jerry Webb, Ottie Thomas, Washington County Life Saving Crew, Officer “Clark” of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Terry Ball,  David Price, Eddie Holmes and Bud Rowe.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  Flowers will be accepted, unless there is a child you can help in her name due to her love for children.  She will be so sadly missed, but Jesus can feel all emptiness.

Clara Davenport Crenshaw

Clara Davenport Crenshaw, age 76 passed away Friday, November 28, 2008 in Valley Healthcare Center, Chilhowie, VA.

Clara was a protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Crenshaw and a daughter, Linda Marie Bordwine.

Survivors include a son, Joe Crenshaw, a daughter, Darlene Bryant and her husband, Ezra Russell Bryant, Jr., Orange, VA, two brothers, Herbert Davenport, Glade Spring, VA and Harold Gene Davenport, Tazewell, VA, two sisters, Zola Lewis, Glade Spring, VA and Talitha Henegar, Abingdon, VA, two grandchildren, Jennifer Woody and Angela Barrett, one great grandchild, Brandon Woody and several nieces and nieces.

A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:20 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens).

Goldie Pearl Roark

 

Mrs. Goldie Pearl Roark, 71, of Abingdon went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at her home.

 

She had spent most of her life in Abingdon and was the daughter of the late, Bascom Hensley and Alice Hubbard Hensley Isennock. She was a member of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.

 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marion Cicero Roark; sisters, Linda and Kathy Hensley; and brothers, Vernoy and Dallas Hensley.

 

Survivors are her four children, Tony Roark and wife, Nancy, Connie DeBusk and husband, Frank, Lisa Ennis and husband, Will all of Abingdon, and Lorrie Smith and husband, Tim of Chesterfield, Virginia; sisters, Fayetta Williams and husband, Alvin of Forest Hill, Maryland, Lucille Jones and husband, Bobby of Mulberry, Florida, and Beverly Bailey and husband, Barry; brothers, Neal Hensley, Kenny Hensley and wife, Ann, Robbie Hensley and wife, Delores, and Randy Hensley and wife, Debbie all of Abingdon; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Goldie Roark will be conducted at 11:00am Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Valley View Freewill Baptist Church (19423 Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon) with Rev. Herbert Bailey and Gary Roark officiating. Interment will follow in Valley View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Heath DeBusk, Adam Roark, T.J. Roark, Derrick Smith, Steve Miller, Derek Fitzwater, Brad Bailey, and Eric Bailey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Orville Roark, Fred Roark, McKinley Miller, Charlie Ray Miller, Barry Bailey, Mike Doss, Josh Boone, Junior Norris, Jeff Stiltner, Danny Rowe and Members of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church.

 

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 7:00pm until 9:00pm Monday evening.
