Bobby Roscoe Wilson

Bobby Roscoe (Bob) Wilson, husband, father, grandfather, geologist, gentleman farmer, beekeeper, classic car mechanic and friend, died on September 20, 2008.  He was 65 years old and a resident of Damascus, Virginia.

Bob was devoted to his family and friends and, throughout his long career as a field geologist in the western United States and Virginia, left behind legions of friends and colleagues who greatly miss his wise counsel, steadfast friendship, and abiding affection that always triumphed over the peculiar circumstances of life.  Bob was at times larger than life and always full of life, and those who loved him will remember that always.  He was a loving father and a terror to evildoers everywhere.

Bob was born on August 1, 1943 in Chatham County, North Carolina, the son of Arthur Roscoe and Katie Ellen Wilson of Wilsonville, North Carolina.  He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in geology, while playing center for the Wolfpack football team.  On June 8, 1966, he married Helen Jane Bell, with whom he has spent forty-two happy years.  Bob received a master’s degree in geology from Eastern Kentucky University and began to study for a Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University.  By this time, Bob’s family had grown to include daughter Joanna and son Adam.  Together they moved to Denver, Colorado, where he began his career as a field geologist for Amoco.

Bob worked for many years as a field geologist, exploring gas and oil fields in Colorado, Nevada, Kansas, and Texas.  Not content to explore by foot and truck, it was during this time that Bob learned to fly helicopters.  After many years, Bob joined Voyager as a field geologist, and continued his explorations throughout the western United States.  In the 1980s, he started his own gas and oil exploration firm, in which he remained active in the field as a geologist.  Bob was devoted to his family and, throughout his travels, always insisted that his family remain together; this often resulted in summer-long family trips accompanying Bob on his explorations throughout the West.  In 1990, Bob had the opportunity to return East, joining the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy’s Division of Gas and Oil as a field geologist.  Bob was quickly promoted to director, a position he held until his death.  Despite the rigors of life as a field geologist, he was rarely separated from his family, and never any longer than necessary.  His family remained with him throughout his illness, and he was surrounded by his family until the end.

Bob is survived by his wife Helen, of Damascus, Virginia; his daughter Joanna and son-in-law Bryan Green, of Richmond, Virginia; and his son Adam and daughter-in-law Heather, and grandson Liam, of Atlanta, Georgia.   He is also survived by his sister Joan Frazier, of Chatham County, North Carolina.  At Bob’s request, there will be no memorial service. Those wishing to honor his life may donate in his name to the Sierra Club, Heifer International, or to their local blood bank.
