Dan Graham Stevens

September 8, 1920 — November 29, 2017

Abingdon, Va.

Dan Graham Stevens, 97, former Treasurer of Washington County, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at his home.

Dan was born September 8, 1920, the third son of the late John M. and Flora W. Stevens of Abingdon, Virginia. He was a life-long resident of Washington County, attended Denton Valley Elementary School, and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1940. After graduation he operated his father’s school bus and attended Washington County Trade School.

He was inducted into the U. S. Army on November 7, 1942, and was assigned to the 99th Infantry Division. After basic and extended training, the 99th sailed the Atlantic to the European Theatre. The 99th was involved in several conflicts including the capture of the bridge at Remagen crossing the Rhine, and very much involved in the Battle of the Bulge. The war ended in 1945, but Dan stayed in Germany for a few months.

After being honorably discharged in January, 1946, Dan returned to the family farm and worked the Abingdon Tobacco Market. He later attended VPI and received a certificate in Dairy Manufacturing. He was employed at the Pet Milk Company for a few months before accepting employment in the Washington County Treasurer’s Office as Deputy Treasurer. Due to the death of the Treasurer in April, 1966, he was appointed Treasurer. In 1967, he was elected Treasurer and was re-elected each four years thereafter until retiring in July, 1986.

Dan has enjoyed his retirement, taking life easy and enjoying all the wonderful blessings provided by the good Lord. He enjoyed attending church and visiting neighbors and friends. Dan was a member of Greendale Chapel and loved his Pastor and church family very much.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Stevens and Howard Stevens.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Kathryn Ferguson Stevens of Abingdon; a niece, nephew, many cousins, co-workers, friends and neighbors whom he appreciated very much.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, December 3, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Jerry A. Eggers, Pastor Tim Stevens, and Pastor Luther Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until time of the funeral service. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jeff Buchanan, Eddie McConnell, Charles A. Stevens, L. J. Doss, Roy McNew, and Jerry Leonard. Honorary pallbearers will be Men of Greendale Chapel, friends and neighbors. Special thanks is extended to Eula Grant, Sissy Anderson, Lisa Blanken, and his many friends, neighbors, and church family for their many acts of kindness through the years.
