Wayne Nelson, age 67, of Abingdon, Va., returned to be with the Lord on Monday, February 12, 2018, at his home. “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” -Romans 8:18 He was born June 28, 1950, to the late Howard Nelson and Jeanette Lunsford Nelson. Wayne was a member of Woodland Hills Christian Church. He fought a courageous battle against a stroke and cancer. Wayne enjoyed so many things in life, but especially family, friends, children, hunting, walleye fishing, NASCAR, and bowling. He was a very special person and words cannot express how much he will be missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Joan Childress Nelson; son, Brian Williams of Bristol, Va.; sister, Jane Hall and husband, Butch, of Bristol, Va.; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and his darlins’.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Roger Phelps and Minister Ron Musick officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park where Mike Blevins, Travis Fletcher, Charlie Harmon, James Harmon, Bear Lloyd, and Jerry Lunsford will serve as pallbearers. Dr. Mark Handy, George Houser, Lonnie Long, and George Mitchell will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, Tenn. 38105, or flowers will be accepted.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Caris Hospice, the Select Specialty Hospital of Bristol Regional Medical Center, Health South, JMH Therapy, and the nurses and staff of Abingdon Health and Rehab.
