Billy James Campbell, 84, died on February 6, 2010 at Russell County Medical Center.
Billy was born in Russell County, Virginia. Bill, as he was better known, was a veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines. Bill was the owner of Campbell Hardware and Furniture Store, Campbell Dollar Store in Lebanon, VA and was a John Deere dealer for many years. He co-owned antique stores in Lebanon and Bristol as well. After retiring from the business he worked as a magistrate in Russell County and continued to enjoy antiques, showing and selling antiques in Wytheville, Marion, Chilhowie, Bristol and at the Virginia Highlands Festival and the Mid-Atlantic Garden show in Abingdon. He wore many hats in the community and spent hours helping to organize and then coach Little League. He served on numerous committees and boards and served several terms on the Lebanon Town Council. He was a long-time member and officer of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church for many years before moving to Abingdon, and after retirement transferred his membership to Abingdon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Daisy Burke Campbell; two sons, Randall Campbell and his wife Rebecca DeVilbiss Campbell of Roanoke, VA, and Nelson A. “Tony” Dodi and his wife Gloria Dodi of Lebanon, VA; two sisters, Ruby Campbell Lepore and husband Kenneth Wallgren of Maryland and Anne Campbell of Lebanon, VA. He also enjoyed four grandchildren, Anne Louise Campbell of Paris, France, Emily and Jacob Campbell of Roanoke, VA and Dr. Kaitlin Dodi of Lebanon, VA; a sister-in-law, Shirley Smith Campbell of Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Bertron Campbell and Ethel Campbell; sisters Mary Margaret Campbell and Doris Campbell Bundy; brothers Harry Campbell, Denby Campbell, Joe G. Campbell, and Alfred Campbell.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 6 pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Walter Weikel and Rev. David Brannock officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 pm until the time of the service on Monday. A private crypt-side service will be held later.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Campbell, Donnie Campbell, Paul Campbell, Mike Catron, R.D. Snead, Joe Kiser, Giles “Smokey” Fields, June Griffith, Tommy Griffith, Joey Burke, and Steve Burke. Members of the Wesley Bible Class of Abingdon United Methodist Church, Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department, Joe Burke, Fred Garrett, and Harold Mitchell will be honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210; the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department, 745 E. Main Street, Lebanon, VA 24266; or the Washington County Rescue Squad, PO Box 65, Abingdon, VA 24212.
