Douglas Arthur Patterson, Jr., 89, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 in Abingdon.
He was born July 2, 1921 in Toms Creek, VA and was a son of the late Douglas and Lillian McNeil Patterson. He graduated from King College in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He established Patterson Photographic Services in 1952 and was a well known Portrait and Commercial Photographer for many years. Additionally, he continued graduate study in the field of Botany at East Tenn. State University. Douglas was a Scoutmaster for many years; he served as Deacon at Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church, was President of the Virginia Highlands Festival in the early days, and was an avid hiker, camper, woodworker, gardener and naturalist. He had also served as President of the Abingdon Rotary Club and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award and lifetime honorary membership in the Rotary Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Patterson Campbell.
Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Cozart Patterson; one daughter, Martha Patterson Morefield of Abingdon; three sons, James Mac G. Patterson, Douglas A. Patterson, III, and Edward Byars Patterson all of Abingdon; four grandchildren, Nancy Elizabeth Taylor, James Robert Morefield, Lukas McNeil Patterson and Ian St. John Patterson and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, July 5, 2010 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Timothy Bird officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Arts Depot, Friends of the Library, or the Nature Conservancy.
