Claude L. McNew, 88, passed away peacefully Saturday. November 5, 2011. Claude was born January 7, 1923 in Washington County, VA.
He served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and was part of the 141 Engineer Combat Battalion that fought in Normandy of D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was a retired employee of United Parcel Service.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Brown McNew; mother, Callie Ellen McNew; an infant son, Danny McNew and a loving daughter, Patti Kay McNew.
Survivors include his sons, Tom McNew, Fred McNew and Jack McNew; his daughters, Betty Lou Kistner, Susie Rhudy and Robin Owens; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; special friend, Steve Henegar and his much loved companion, his pet pug Luke.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Brad Davis officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
The family appreciates and thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital for their care.
The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 8, 2011.
