Clay Randall Copeland

d. October 15, 2012

Clay Randall Copeland, 27, of Abingdon, Va., passed away Oct. 15, 2012, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, with a host of friends and family at his side. He was born Dec. 11, 1984 in Abingdon, a son of Susan May Copeland and James Randall "Randy" Copeland, both of Abingdon.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved sister and brother, Kelsey Rae Copeland of Abingdon, and Jeremy Conte of Merrimack, N.H., and a very special niece, Isabella Conte, who fondly called him "Big Bird." He was the grandson of the late Carolyn May, who lived with his family since Clay was 11 years old, and the late Muriel Virginia Copeland of Abingdon, and the great grandson of the late Muriel Bundy.

Other survivors include his Aunt Jo and Uncle Bruce Lorenz and his Aunt Shirley and Uncle Will Ellis; his cousins, Joshua Lorenz, Amanda Lorenz, Tiffany Lorenz, Robert Ellis, Kristin Ellis, Bill Ellis and Adam Ellis; his Uncle John Bundy and Aunt Connie Bundy, and his cousins Alyson Bundy Dillow, Sarah Bundy and Rachel Bundy Bales; his Great Aunt Sally Muse and Great Uncle Michael Muse, and cousins Lisa Holmes, William Holmes and Fred Holmes.

Clay was a 2003 graduate of Abingdon High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in building construction from Virginia Tech, where he was an oh-so-proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was employed as a representative of Sesco Insurance Group. He formerly was a contract administrator for Thompson & Litton. He recently became involved with the Virginia Tech Alumni Association here in Southwest Virginia and was newly in charge of social functions.

The funeral service for Clay Copeland will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2012, at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Paul Viers officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Ryan Overbay, Brandon Overbay, Nathan McGraw, Rayland Felts, Craig Thompson, Matt Rasnake, Adam Hall, Jason Lansdell and Chris Pennisi.
Honorary pallbearers are his very special Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity brothers, and the many, many friends that he made so easily, especially in wonderful Abingdon, a community he loved and cherished.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 9:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The Virginia Tech Alumni Association in Southwest Virginia has helped organize the Clay Copeland Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1888, Abingdon, VA 24212, and the family suggests memorial contributions to that fund.
