Cleveland Holmes

Cleveland "Dudger" Holmes, a Saltville native and long-time resident of Glade Spring, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee.
He was born in the Henrytown community on May 21, 1927 and was the last surviving child of the late George Marvin Holmes and Lillian Counts Holmes Cannon. He was a 1946 graduate of Glade Spring High School and was a World War II Navy Veteran. He retired from United States Gypsum Company as an electric foreman in 1987 after more than 42 years of service.
He served as Vice-Mayor of Glade Spring in the 1980s and held numerous positions within his community, church and schools. He was formerly a member of Byars-Cobb Memorial United Methodist Church in Glade Spring and was currently a member of State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol.
Dudger loved animals, nature, music, spending time with his family, painting birdhouses and traveling. He was a wonderful husband and father and a kind and generous man who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Betty Hammonds Holmes; his brothers, Lunsford S. Holmes and Marvin T. "Buddy" Holmes; and a sister, Geraldine Holmes Luttinen.
He is survived by his daughters, Cindy Holmes-Drury and husband John of Blountville and Jill Henderson and husband Sanders of Saltville; his niece, Sheri Holmes Bowman of Glade Spring; a sister-in-law, Lake Holmes of Glade Spring and several cousins.
A graveside funeral service with military honors for Cleveland "Dudger" Holmes will be conducted Monday, April 9, 2012 at 2 o'clock at Mount Rose Cemetery with Brother Sam Haynes officiating. Pallbearers will be David Allen, Charles Byrd, Jeff Campbell, Bobby Hammond, Darius Bowman, Gerald Norris, Max Snider, and Harry Haynes. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Arnold, Paul Tuell, and Dr. Claude Garfield. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
