Abingdon, VA Dennis Rodney Goodenough, age 79, passed on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Dennis was born and raised in England where he served bravely in the British Royal Marines before moving to the United States in 1964. He loved animals, science, nature, history, and was a talented writer. Dennis was an insatiable reader and his knowledge and intelligence let him do almost anything he chose. His career carried him through retail, carpentry, home building, construction, and computer programming and analysis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Goodenough and Irene Booth Goodenough; grandson, Justin Bernard; and numerous beloved pets.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Deborah Ciscon Goodenough; five children, Terrence Goodenough, Mandy Peterson and husband Steve, and John Goodenough, all of Connecticut, and David Goodenough and Christopher Feifer Goodenough; brother, David Goodenough and wife Marge of Myersville, MD; sisters, Diane Chenette and partner Tommy Geer of Griswold, CT, and Doreen Morgan of Arvada, CO; grandchildren, Chrystal Henneberger and husband Dan, Christopher Goodenough and wife Stephanie, Izaias Sardo, and Matthew Goodenough, all of Connecticut, and Harrison Bernard of Florida; four great grandchildren; dear cousin, Colin Brooker and wife Jean of Reading England; mother-in-law, Gloria Wolinski; sister-in-law, Martha Kaselis and husband Peter; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held 5-6 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Allied armed forces military rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard.
