Elmer C. Wright, 85, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Bristol a son of the late Clarence and Bessie Wright but had spent most of his life in Abingdon. Elmer was a jockey from 1943 to 1951 and was the fifth leading rider in the country in 1945. He loved mostly his grandchildren, his cats, and the neighborhood ducks. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Cantrell Wright; a brother, Clarence Wright; and sisters, Pat Lilly and Vivian Lane.

Survivors are his children, Steve and Linda Wright of Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, Rick and Brenda McMillan of Bristol, TN, and Greg and Sharon Wright of Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Eric and Brian Wright, Candace Varney, Scott Kenny, and Shelley and Shane Wright; great grandchildren, Lakyn Graybeal and Mykella Meade; sister, Betty Martin of Hopewell, VA; special nieces and nephews, Danny and Evelyn Wright of Ocala, FL and Clifford and Cathi Cantrell of Baltimore, MD.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 15, 2010 in Mt. View United Methodist Church Cemetery on Rt. 75 in Abingdon with Rev. Nicole Hill officiating. Interment will follow. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends Sunday afternoon at Farris Funeral Service from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M.
