Frenchmon Owens

Frenchmon Owens, 87, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 9, 1924 in Dickenson County, VA and was a son of the late William Walter and Barbara Ann Owens. He served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard during WWII and had worked as a machinist most of his life. Mr. Owens was a member of Holston Valley Old Regular Baptist Church in Abingdon.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Cary Owens, Maudy Owens, Perly Owens, Maxie Fuller, Bonnie Owens, and Omie Deel and brothers, Tom Owens, William Walter Owens, Jr., James Monroe Owens, and Trinkle Owens and a grandson, Michael Hagy.

Survivors are his wife of 36 years, Lessie Salyers Owens; his sister, Flora Deel of Haysi, VA; sons, Billy Owens and wife Nina of Abingdon, and Terry Owens of Haysi, VA; daughters, Sandy Coleman and husband, Paul of Vansant; step daughters, Vonda Slone and husband, Jim of Grundy, VA and Jean Hill and husband, Ray of Mills River, NC; step sons, Larry Garfield Looney and wife, Ernestine of Grundy and Ricky Looney of Abingdon; grandchildren, Anna Broyles, Ava Galliher, Tamara Thompson, Daphne Hartford, Christie Coleman, Keith Hagy, Angela Newberry, Amy Hill, Summer Eller and Aaron Looney; great grandchildren, Aisha Bentley, Sara Galliher, Leah Galliher, Riley Thompson, Corey Thompson, Kyle Hartford, Kaitlyn Hartford, Mason Deskins, Lauren Deskins, Nash Newberry and Nia Newberry; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 16, 2011 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Elder Anion Cole and Elder Jackie Church officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tim Broyles, Robbie Galliher, Keith Hagy, Todd Newberry, Aaron Looney and Eric Thompson. Military honors will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. Tuesday with a song service to be held at 7:00 P.M.
