Gary Scotty McCoy

Abingdon, VA - Gary Scotty McCoy, 66, died after a long illness on Thursday, June 2, 2016, surrounded by his family, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. Scotty was born in Ieager, WV on August 3, 1949, but lived most of his life in Buchanan County and Abingdon, VA. He was the son of the late Walter Scott McCoy and Marietta Mae Cline McCoy. He is survived by one step-daughter, Autumn Grindstaff-Daniel, Powhatan, VA, one brother, Archie R. (Emma JoBill) McCoy Bluefield, VA; five sisters: Jeanne Cooper, Bristol, VA; Beverly Looney, Pompano, FL; Penny McCallum, Abingdon; Judy (Don) Little, Doswell, VA; Sharon Collins, Claypool Hill; Robin McCoy, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews to whom he was affectionately known as uncle man as coined by a favorite nephew Lil Scott McCoy. Scotty was predeceased by his parents; sister, Phyllis M. Coleman; brother, Larry McCoy; his nephews, Carey Allen Yates and Larry Scott Lil Scott McCoy; three brothers-in-law Kenneth Coleman, James Looney, Jay McCallum and former brother-in-law, Leroy Jones. Scotty loved his family. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. He cultivated many friendships that endured and sustained him until the end.

Scotty graduated from Grundy High School (1967). He attended Pikeville College. Scotty loved sports especially college football and basketball and particularly enjoyed attending UVA football games. Fishing and playing golf were favorite hobbies. He always looked forward to golfing trips to Myrtle Beach, SC with friends. He was a good fan of NASCAR. He was a true aficionado of music especially of rock from the 1960s present. He was the lead singer in a small band (the Rubberband) in the 1960s. Scotty could have someone sing or hum a few lyrics of a song and he could immediately name the singer or group and title of the song. He valued his music collection as one of his most prized possessions.

Scotty was a successful businessman. He was owner of Grundy Mining Supply during the mining boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He later became a successful salesman of life insurance which he did until failing health forced his retirement. Scotty will be dearly missed by his family and will be fondly remembered by his friends. To paraphrase a famous quote from 2Timothy, Scotty fought the good fight and kept the faith

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2016 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service 2:00 p.m. at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy.
