George Thurman Mitchell

Abingdon, Va. 

George Thurman Mitchell, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  He was born October 27, 1930, to the late Jonathan J. Mitchell and Bertha Matney Mitchell in Buchanan County, Va.  George was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict in Germany. 

He served as a juvenile probation officer in Buchanan County prior to relocating to Abingdon where he was employed by the State of Virginia Department of Social Services, working as a financial service specialist for 40 years. 

He was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ and a lifetime member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge No. 17, as well as the Abingdon Lodge No. 48.

In addition to his parents, George was also preceded in death by a brother, Jessee Everett Mitchell; two sisters, Joy Taylor and Maybelle Sartain; and two brothers-in-law, Leo Scott and Jimmy Countiss. 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois Marlene Keene Mitchell; daughter, Jennifer Mitchell of Bristol, Va.; brother Jack Mitchell and wife Susan of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Ruby Scott of McCoy, Va, and Lovis Countiss of Abingdon, Va.

Visitation with the family will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2019, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Church of Christ with Minister Ron Musick officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with John Dellis, Johnny Bare, Mark Bias, Richard Williams, Rick Taylor, and Jeff Keene serving as pallbearers.  Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.  Sam Rock, Calvin Matney, Guy Warner, Charles Grogan, Jerry Keene, Olen Keene, Dewey Williams, Kim Scott, Steve Hylton, Jim Horton, John Kegley, Jerry Schuler, and the men of Macedonia Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers. 

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Island Road Cancer Center and to Betsy Bobenmoyer and Mary Jessee at the Infusion Center at Bristol Regional Medical Center for the care they provided Mr. Mitchell. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123, or to the Macedonia Church of Christ Van Ministry Fund, P.O. Box 1385 Abingdon, Virginia 24212, in Mr. Mitchell’s name.
