Abingdon, VA- Geraldine “Jube” Sewell Southern, 91, of Naples, FL, formerly of Clintwood, VA died at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. She was a member of the North Naples United Methodist Church and the Black’s Fort Chapter of the DAR. She loved her family dearly and as Mother, Sister, Nana, Aunt Jubie, and friend she will be greatly missed. Mrs. Southern was born on November 12, 1922 in Jonesville, VA the second of seven children born to the late David Cottrell Sewell, Jr. and Vesta Ely Sewell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, William Colby Southern, Jr.; three brothers: D.C. Sewell, III; Winston Sewell; and George Sewell; and two sisters, Marietta S. Varner and Vivian S. McCall. She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine "Dena" S. Hamblen and husband Bob of Roanoke, VA and Vera Sue Peters and husband David of Richlands, VA; brother, Sidney R. Sewell and wife Carolyn of Orange Park, FL; brother-in-law, Bill McCall of Richlands, VA; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Sewell of Durham, NC; five grandchildren: Scott Hamblen and wife Caryn of Lake Worth, FL; Steven Hamblen of High Point, NC; Chad Peters of Charlottesville, VA; Eric Peters of Richlands, VA; Rachel Peters of Bristol, VA; six great grandchildren, Dylan and Ella Hamblen, Kaylee and Quinn Hamblen, Ava and Jena Peters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home with the Reverend J. Leonard Smith officiating. Sons-in-law, grandsons, her brother, and brother-in-law will serve as honorary pallbearers. A committal service will be held at a later date at Highland Cemetery in Rogersville, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or charity of your choice. Dena and Sue are most grateful for the very special people who lovingly helped them and their mother during the last stage of her full and wonderful life.
