Our beautiful mother, Gretchen Maiden Kendrick, 90, died July 17, 2011, at her home in Meadowview.

She was the daughter of the late Earnest and Elizabeth Maiden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernie Dell Kendrick, and by three brothers, Wiley Maiden, George Maiden, and Roger Maiden.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 from Emory and Henry College. She was active in school and community affairs and a lifelong member of Meadowview United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children Anne Coulthard and husband Don, Emory; Carol Minetree and husband, Russell, Abingdon; and Craig Kendrick and Brenda Kendrick, Meadowview; one sister, Helen Dodson of Nashville and one sister-in-law, Jewel Maiden, Abingdon; grandchildren, Ken Coulthard and wife Cynthia Jones, Brentwood, TN; Rachel Minetree and Marianne Minetree , Miami, FL; Adam Kendrick, Brussels, Belgium; Brett Kendrick, New York, NY; and Clinton Kendrick and wife MacKenzie, Abingdon; and three great-grandchildren: Ben Coulthard, Will Coulthard, and Bentley Kendrick.

A funeral service will be conducted July 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the Meadowview United Methodist Church with Rev. David Jackson and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in Holston Conference Cemetery, Emory. Pallbearers will be Don Coulthard, Russell Minetree, her grandsons, and Dewey Davenport. Honorary pallbearers will be W.E. Giesler and Ned Hayter. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. July 19, 2011 at Farris Funeral Services, Main Street, Abingdon.

The family expresses their appreciation to those caregivers who took such wonderful care of our mother during her extended illness: Joan Davenport, Beulah Taylor, and Melissa Ashley, and the nurses of Hospice of Southwest Virginia.
