Harriet D. Fulbright, 86, Bristol, VA, passed away May 22, 2010.
She was born and raised in Abingdon, and was a daughter of the late Samuel Fred and Nannie Dolinger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James H. Fulbright, two brothers, Andy Dolinger and Samuel Fred Dolinger, Jr., and a sister, Freda James.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Finger of Rock Hill, SC, and her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Glenda Fulbright of Johnson City, TN. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Tom Casey of Bristol, two sisters-in-law, Betty Dolinger of Abingdon and Ellen Dolinger of Bristol, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Harriet was a member of the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Bristol, VA, since 1967.
After finishing high school, Mom rode the train from Abingdon to Washington, DC, and worked as a secretary in the Pentagon during World War II. She later married a handsome young Marine and they started a family together. During Dad's frequent and sometimes lengthy overseas deployments during the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War, Mom held the family together as we crisscrossed the country like other military families. After Dad retired, Mom insisted that we move back to her beloved Southwest Virginia. She had an amazing green thumb and loved nothing better than to work in the good Earth. In the next 30-some years, her vegetable gardens produced an abundance of all kinds of vegetables, and her many flower gardens provided beauty for our yard, house, and decorated the sanctuary of Walnut Grove church every Sunday morning. After her kids had left home, Mom decided to start a late career by becoming a nurse like her mother. At the age of 50, she completed LPN training and worked at the old Bristol hospital for several years. There are still nurses in the area who remember Harriet's crisply starched white uniforms and "can-do" attitude. Later, Mom and Dad traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Scandinavia, and the US Pacific Northwest, among other places. It gives the family great comfort to know that Mom is finally reunited with her beloved husband, sister, Freda, and brothers, Sam and Andy. The family would like to express its gratitude to the wonderful people at Aid & Assist at Home, especially Sarah Edmondson, Jennifer Love, Tammy Roark, and Ashley McLaughlin. You provided great comfort to Mom in her last months, and we will never forget you. The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff at the Wellmont Hospice House for their loving and compassionate care. Mom was a member of the Greatest Generation, and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 25, 2010 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John Markel officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service Tuesday evening.
A committal service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery.
