Harry A. Gunter, age 89, passed on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Harry served as gunner on destroyers in the U.S. Navy in the Europian Theatre during WWII. He was born in Pineville, WV and lived in Kentucky and Southwest, VA before moving to Abingdon 27 years ago. Mr. Gunter retired from Island Creek Coal Company as Director of Industrial Relations after numerous years of service. Mr. Gunter was also a member of Abingdon Baptist Church. Harry enjoyed music, sports, as well as coaching and officiating Little League where he had a fondness for watching the kids he coached grow up.



He is preceded in death by his parents, Hobart and Ina Mae Tilley Gunter; infant twin sons; brother, Sidney Gunter; twin sister, Lucille Stewart; sister, Mary Morgan; and sister-in-law, Nancy Gunter.



He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Renva Wyatt Gunter; two sons, Ronald Gunter of Abingdon, VA and Tim (Paige) Gunter of Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters, Erin and Madison Gunter; two brothers, Jim (Charlene) Gunter of Pineville, WV and Tom Gunter of Oceana, WV; two sisters, Shirley (Richard) True of Sacramento, CA and Kitty (Joe) Childress of Beckley, WV; sister-in-law, Rebecca Gunter of Clemmons, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.



Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Steven Pollard and Mr. Richard Foil officiating. Entombment will follow at Serenity Gardens Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Tom Gunter, Jim Gunter, Kevin Able, Dennis Farmer, Kenny Farmer, and J.E. King serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the member of the Denton Sunday School Class. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.



Visitation with family will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Abingdon Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
