Hassie Lee McCray Woodward Webb, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Abingdon Health and Rehab. Born July 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Dale McCray and Ruby Johnson McCray. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 37 years, Samuel Preston Woodward; her second husband, Raymond Lee Webb; her son, Lonnie Woodward; her son-in-law, Roger Hagy; by her brothers, CD McCray and Jimmy McCray; and her sister, Pauline Jackson.
She is survived by her daughter, Eva Jane Woodward Hagy of Abingdon; her son, Glenn Woodward and wife Bonnie of Denver, N.C.; and her daughter-in-law, Gail Woodward of Mt. Holly, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Eric Woodward and wife Nikki of Mt. Holly, N.C.; Glenn Woodward II and wife Stacey of Raleigh, N.C.; Matthew Woodward and wife Stephanie of Harlingen, Texas; Amy Baumgardner and husband Steve of Bristol, Tenn.; and Mark Hagy of Abingdon. In addition, she is survived by her great-grandchildren, Lauren and Lane Baumgardner, and Hollee, Sammy, Tyler and EnvyRoze Woodward. She is also survived by her sister, Edith Sanders and husband Chester of Melbourne, Fla.; her brother, Garnett McCray and wife Mary of Ocala, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Bobbie Schlitz of Stone Mountain, Ga.
Until her health failed, she was a faithful member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Abingdon, where she was known for her cheerful smile and her caramel cakes. A hard worker all her life, she worked in an ammunition plant during World War II. Later, she worked as a school cook at Central School and William King Elementary School. In the late 1960s, she and her husband Preston founded Woodward’s Rest Home, which they owned and operated jointly until his death. She continued as owner/operator, selling the business to her daughter and son-in-law in 1987.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Va. 24210, with Pastor David Robins and Pastor Chad Johnson officiating. A committal service will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Mrs. Webb’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Forest Hills Chapel prior to the service.
