Havard Smeltzer Shortt

Havard Smeltzer Shortt, age 97, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Grace Healthcare. He was a native of Abingdon, VA but lived in Baltimore, MD for a short period of time while employed by the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps having served during World War II. After returning to Abingdon, VA he became a Charter Member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church having served on the Board of Trustees numerous times. He retired from Raytheon where he was employed as a Precision Machinist for 20 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, Washington County Post No. 12.

He was born to the late George Washington Shortt and Margaret Elizabeth Lilly Shortt. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Jeanette Woodward Shortt; brother, Samuel Winton Shortt; and his sister, Bonnie Shortt Nelson.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna Jean Shortt of Abingdon, VA; sister, Opal Miller of Bristol, VA; grandson, Stephen "Blake" Eades and wife Amber of Emory, VA; great granddaughter, Mallorie; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Reverend Barbara Farmer and the Reverend Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be church family and friends far and wide. Family and friends will meet at Knollkreg Memorial Park for a committal service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 12th where Military Honors will be presented by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA 24210, in Mr. Shortt's honor.
