Jimmy D. Widener, Sr., age 69, went into the open arms of Jesus on Monday, April 23, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC, surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman M. and Lillie Haga Widener; and brother, Harry M. Widener.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 46 years, Joyce Ratcliff Widener; children , Melinda Widener Disher and husband Scott, Jimmy D. Widener, II and wife Becki; and the joys of his life, his grandchildren; Ashley Nicole Disher, Ryan Michael Disher, Brandon Scott Disher, and Justin Alexander Widener.

He was a graduate of Abingdon High School class of 1960, a veteran of the United States Air Force, and retired from the Virginia State Police with 33 years of service. He was a member of Highlands Fellowship Church, a proud member of the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard, and was a volunteer at Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, with Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia State Police Honor Guard. Entombment will follow in the Serenity Gardens Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Danny Widener, Rick Widener, Chris Widener, Steve Frazier, Jeff Carter, and Stu Ford. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Virginia State Police 4th Division and the officers of Washington and Wythe Counties. In lieu of flowers, Jim would wish donations be made in his memory to the Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry, P.O. Box 553, Abingdon, Virginia 24212. The family would like to express their appreciation for all of the prayers, cards, and many acts of kindness bestowed upon them during this difficult time.
