Joel "Joe" William Stringer

Joel “Joe” William Stringer, 93, passed away in his home in Bristol, Va. on Saturday, April 20, 2019.
Joe was born Feb. 20, 1926 in Meadowview, Virginia. He was the son of the late Thomas Henderson Stringer, Jr. and America Virginia Booth Stringer. He was also proceeded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Joe is survived by his wife, Willie Nickels Stringer; son John Stringer; daughter Becca Stringer Burnette and her husband Joe Burnette; grandchildren Chase Hobson, Carmen Roberts, and Angelina Rutherford; great-grandchildren Devin and Christian Roberts, Preston and Morgan Rutherford; his sister Peggy Stringer Lester; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He attended Meadowview High School, Washington County Trade School and the National Business College in Roanoke. He was a WWII veteran with the 16th Armored Div. European Theater and Occupation Forces in Czechoslovakia, Germany, and France. He retired from Raytheon and served as the Treasurer of the Credit Union for many years. Joe was a member of the Green Springs Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to thank Lloyd Lusk and Mary Jane Crosby for their great friendship. They would also like to thank Joe’s special caregivers, Joe Burnette, Angel Fields, Divine Home Health, and MSA Home Health and Hospice.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 2 p.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park, with Rev. Jon Martin officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be Chase Hobson, Jackie Lester, Billie Lester, Preston Rutherford, Christian Roberts, Devin Roberts, Eddie Stringer, and Hugh Stringer, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Lloyd Lusk, Don Carty, John Lee Jellicorse, Jim Stringer, Joe Burnette, and Jeffrey Roberts. The family will receive friends in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service from 1-1:45 pm on Wednesday. All those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the funeral home to go in procession by 1:45 pm.
