Joyce Ann "Toby" Sproles

January 31, 1935 — March 2, 2019

” The song is ended, but the melody lingers on...” – Irving Berlin

Mendota, Va. - Joyce Ann Sproles (Toby), 84, passed away on March 2, 2019, at Abingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Toby was born in Wise County, Va. but made her home in Mendota, Va. after marrying her soulmate, Edgar, in 1951. She enjoyed 56 years of marriage with Edgar before he preceded her in death in 2007.

Toby worked many years and retired from the Washington County Virginia School System. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends and sharing her talents through her gift of baking breads, making cakes, quilting, painting and singing. She loved to sing in church or around the house to her tapes, sharing her love and faith in God with those around her. Even after Parkinson’s robbed her of her mobility, she continued to quilt and make crafts for friends and family.

Toby is survived by her five children: Lois Collins, Sandy Sproles, Lisa Gilbert (Darrell), Tommy Sproles (Julie), and Scott Sproles (Diane); her seven grandchildren: Bryan Collins (Grace), Scott Collins (Mandi), Richard Gilbert, Beth Taylor (Chris), Courtney Sproles, Carrie Sproles, and Rachael Sproles, as well as five great-grandchildren: Emma, Taylor, Ally, Khloe, Jaden, and one on the way. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a host of friends and neighbors to cherish her memory.

The family would like to extend our forever love and gratitude to Toby’s caregiver and special neighbor, Tina Millard, for loving Toby as part of her own family and taking such amazing care of her for so many years. To Sam Hoch, we are humbled by your love, and the multiple acts of kindness towards Toby and our family will never be forgotten. Thank you to all of our family/work friends that have showered us with your prayers, compassion, and support; you each are appreciated more than you will ever know. Also, a special thank you to the staff at Abingdon Health and Rehab for the support, care, and encouragement provided to Toby during her time there.
