Leonard (Lon) Edward Bowerman

Leonard (Lon) Edward Bowerman died peacefully at home on June 30, 2018.

Lon was born on July 20, 1937 in Memphis, Tenn., the eldest of two boys of the late Leonard W. and Edna A. Bowerman.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda; his daughter Carrie, married to Mr. Robert A. Barnes of Sevierville, Tenn.; his daughter Andrea, married CW4 (Ret) Joseph Aldous of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; his brother Andrew and wife Debra of Plymouth, Minn.; his grandchildren SGT Richard R. Aldous, Ms. Shannon M. Murphy, Mr. Carl J. Murphy, Mr. Tristan E.A. Aldous, and Miss Samantha R. Aldous.

Lon served honorably in the United States Air Force for four years until 1960. He attended Milwaukee School of Engineering, graduating summa cum laude in 1974 in two disciplines. He then earned his Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Bridgeport, Conn. in 1979, graduating magna cum laude. Lon retired in 1997 after 25 years as the manager of Advanced Research, Product Development and Engineering Services from the Electrolux Company, located in in Bristol, Va.  He had received of a dozen patents for his product development work of nearly 40 years in the appliance industry.  Lon authored several national and international compliance standards under the auspices of the American Society of Testing and Materials.

Lon was actively engaged in support of several local educational institutions. He acted as president of the Board of Recommended Curriculum to the President of ETSU and served on the President’s Advisory Board at the local campus for VT.  Lon was also president of the VA Creeper Trail Club for a period of five years. He was an ardent genealogist, stamp and coin collector, as well as an avid swimmer at the Coomes Center. He will also be remembered through his photographic and video works.  Lon leaves a multitude of family and friends throughout North America, but especially here in the Abingdon and Bristol areas.

In lieu of a memorial service, a private celebration of life will be held for close friends and family.
