Louisa L. Spell

Louisa L. Spell, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 2, 2012. Born on August 19, 1916 in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of Samuel Tucker Lanham and Edith Campbell Crane Lanham. She had a great love of learning, earning an English degree at Converse College, a Nursing degree at Vanderbilt University, and a Masters in Public Health at the University of North Carolina. She also had a great love of teaching: English and Biology at Patrick Henry High School and Nursing at Wytheville Community College, retiring at age 76.
She was a member of the Emory United Methodist Church and held dear the importance of the study, interpretation and sharing of the Biblical word, the hymns which were so familiar and the significance of each person in God's eyes. She was active in programs that benefited the church and the community, and always ready to help those in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-two years, Dr. Charles Raymond Spell, Sr., and many beloved family members and friends.

She is survived by her older sister, Dr. Margaret Merryman Lanham, of the home, her children: Rev. Charles Raymond "Rick" Spell, Jr., and wife Gail of Newport, TN; David Merryman Spell and wife Linda of Bristol, VA; Edith Spell Bobko and husband Ron, of the home; grandchildren: Mary Louisa Spell Hopkins and husband Tom of Tazewell, TN, Bobb Spell of Kingsport, TN, Matt Spell and wife Susanna of Nashville, TN; Jesse, Jeremiah, Nathaniel and Jonathan Spell, of Bristol, VA; Chris and Mark Bobko of Raleigh, NC, and great-grandson Jadon Hopkins of Tazewell, TN.

The family has been much blessed in recent years by caregivers Kathy Mason, Sandy Meadows and Laura Terry, as well as Mandy Blevins and Lena McNew, and the services of Dr. Karen Elmore and Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2012 at Emory United Methodist Church with Reverend David Jackson, Reverend Charles Raymond Spell, Jr., and Reverend John Bardsley officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m., Sunday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emory United Methodist Church or the Raymond Spell Scholarship Fund at Emory & Henry College.
