Lyman Richard “Dick” Comey, 84, of Charlottesville, Va. passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Dick was born on June 16, 1933, in Springfield, Ma. the son of Col. Lyman Ernest Comey and Viola Pearl (Mayer) Comey. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Laura Sue (Lester) Comey; and his sister, Sandra Diane (Comey) Bailey. He is survived by three sons, Bill (Melony Joe) of Alexandria, Va.; David (Sandy) of Chesapeake, Va.; and John (Christina) of Charlotte, N.C.; two granddaughters, Ashlin and Laura; six grandsons, Justin, Matthew (Alexa), Brian, Mark, Hunter and Christopher; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dick was a graduate and life-long supporter of Virginia Tech. He served as Captain in the United States Army Reserve. He taught for ten years as a high school teacher in the Hampton Roads area and spent twenty years as a school administrator in Harrisonburg and Charlottesville. Dick was instrumental in establishing the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center where he retired in 1990 after serving for eighteen years as Principal. Following his career in education, he served on the executive staff of Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge from 1990 to 1997. Dick was an Elder and Trustee at First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville, Va and was active in many civic and charitable associations. After his second retirement, Dick researched and authored two books on the Civil War. A Legacy of Valor: The Memoirs and Letters of Captain Henry Newton Comey, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, published in 2004 by the University of Tennessee Press, was nominated for two national awards. In 2010, Dick wrote Bugler in Butternut, a fictional account of a young boy’s experience joining the 51st Virginia Infantry Regiment.

Dick was a loving, kind, devout and generous gentleman. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He spent 57 years building a rich and joyous life with his wife, Sue. He enjoyed Virginia Tech football, fishing, spending time with his family and being outdoors. Sue and Dick traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe. During the last several years of his life Dick helped provide tender care for his wife who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was assisted in her care by wonderful caregivers at Cedar Manor in Chesapeake.

A funeral ceremony will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, 33234 Lee Hwy., Glade Spring, Va. 24340, with the Rev. Timothy Bird and Rev. Herman R. Peiper, Jr. “Chaplain Chip” officiating. A committal service will follow in the Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
