Mrs. Mary Estella Clark Calandros, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Abingdon, VA, daughter of the late John Thomas Clark and Lena Mae Bailey Clark. Mrs. Calandros was a United States Air Force veteran and worked as a nurse for forty-two years in numerous states due to her husband's military career. She was a member of the National Nurse Association of California.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Calandros was preceded in death by her son, John Thomas Calandros, sister Joyce Troitino, brother John Thomas Clark, Jr., and son-in-law, Jerry Lynn Rutledge.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Louis Calandros; son Michael Louis Calandros and special friend Kathy D. Eggers of Piney Flats, TN; daughter Eleanor Calandros Rutledge of Bluff City, TN and her special friend Theodore L. Dougherty of Piney Flats, TN; sisters Sarah Groseclose of Abingdon, Eleanor Groseclose of Tennessee, and Becky Newcomb of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren Thomas Louis Calandros, John Michael Calandros, Mary Catherine Calandros, Megan Calandros and Alice Rutledge Malone; great-grandchildren, Katie Calandros, Corey Calandros, and Lydia Hope Malone; and a special friend, Diane Broyles.
The funeral service for Mrs. Calandros will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Paul Bufford officiating. Entombment will follow at Knollkreg Mausoleum in Abingdon with Billy Jack Groseclose, II, Gaither Humphreys, Eric Humphreys, Stephen Reynolds, Phillip Reynolds, and Nicholas Reynolds serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Moyher and Danny Hilton. Military rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 3101 Browns Mill Road, Suite 6, PMB 321, Johnson City, TN 37604, www.heart.org, in Mrs. Calandros' name.
