Michael Richard Dovel, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Michael Dovel served in the Corps of Cadets, graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Geology. Having a passion for Mother Earth, Michael worked as a Geologist with the Department of Environmental Quality for more than twenty years. Michael also had a special place in his heart for his computer, Jessica. He was a highly intelligent individual, endowed with a quirky sense of humor.
Michael's profound love for his family enabled him to overcome many obstacles. Michael was truly adored by his four sweet grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years Goddard Dovel; one son, David Dovel of Abingdon, VA; two daughters, Varsha Dovel and husband Travis Davis of Abingdon, VA and Sarah Dovel of Glade Spring, VA; four grandchildren, Raven Davis, Alia Davis, Joseph Harris, and Dominick Dovel; and beloved pets, Morgan and Skyler.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 124 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, with the Reverend Hilary Cambols officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington County, Virginia C.C. Porter Animal Shelter, 27252 Porter Lane, Abingdon, Virginia 24211.
