Philip Nelson

Philip Nelson "Tip" Robinson, 79, loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother and friend passed away peacefully at home on November 27, 2010.

He was born in Nickelsville, VA on September 12, 1931 to the late Henry Lilburn and Daisy Ward Robinson. He was a graduate of St. Paul High School and attended the Nashville Diesel College. He was a United States Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was retired from the oil and gas division of the Pittston Corporation.

He was an avid gardener, farmer, football fan and fisherman. He was a devoted caretaker and provider for his family. He will always be remembered for his appreciation for a good joke, his sense of humor and hearty laugh. He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church and VFW Post #1194.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife and companion of 48 years, Nina Sue Stanley Robinson; brothers, William "Bud" Robinson, James Clyde Robinson and John Elmer Robinson; and sisters, Mildred French and Evelyn Wright.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Robinson and wife Kim of Clintwood, VA, and Chris Robinson and wife Kelly of Bristol, VA; one daughter, Angelia Banks and husband Jerry of Jeffersonton, VA; two sisters, Nola Mae Holbrook of Coeburn, VA and Mary French of Abingdon, VA; five grandchildren, Allie Robinson, Hannah Banks, Bailey Robinson, Taylor Puckett and Trey Puckett; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Philip Nelson Robinson will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Weikel and Rev. Les Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, VA. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #9864 of Lebanon, VA. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Riddle and Harold Holbrook.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 29, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Abingdon United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Cancer Outreach Foundation, 104 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211.

The family would like to express their thanks to wonderful friends and neighbors, Don and Jeanie Campbell for their love and support, and Dr. Forest Swan, Jr. and his staff for the compassionate care they provided.
