Mr. Ray Floyd Duncan, 92, left this life at his beloved home on January 2, 2016, after an extended illness.
Ray was born in Poor Valley and he was a life-long resident of Washington County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wyndham Robertson and Regina Elizabeth Henderson, and his brother, Fount Duncan. Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-four years, Dana Duncan; his daughter and son-in-law, Rana and Tony Daston and their two children, Lana and Jacob; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Michele Duncan and their four children, Nina, Kyra, Tristan and Mara. Survivors also include Rays sister, Lillian Miller, his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Mable Duncan, and several nieces and nephews.
Ray was a United States Army Veteran of WWII who served in North Africa and Italy. He was a Deacon Emeritus of the Abingdon Baptist Church and a Boy Scout leader. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Kiwanis, and the Red Cross. He served on numerous mission trips nationally and internationally through the Lebanon Baptist Association. He worked for the Virginia Forestry Department nineteen years prior to going into the business with Duncan Builders and Abingdon Real Estate Auction Company.
Rays first love, after his family, was the mountains. He had an adventuring spirit, traveled to all fifty states, and chronicled many of his adventures in his memoirs entitled, A Man of the Mountains. Rays most important legacy is that Love Never Dies.
The funeral service will be held at the Abingdon Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016, with Rev. Parke L. Deans, Mr. Richard Foil, and Mr. Bill Haywood officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at the Abingdon Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. Pallbearers will include: Tony Daston, Jacob Daston, Tristan Duncan, Justin Lawson, Carol Sisk, Jim Sisk, Mike Kiser, Don McCray. Honorary pallbearers: Denton-Foil Bible Class, Bob May, Randall Paris, and Steve Lowe. Military honors will be provided by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
The family extends special thanks to Home Health of Southwest Virginia, Home Instead (through the V.A.), Hometown Hospice, and the staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital for the outstanding care Ray received in his last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ray Dana Duncan Association Mission Offering through the Abingdon Baptist Church or to the memorial fund for Ray Duncan through the Abingdon Baptist Church.
