The Rev. Thomas R. Gentry, 87, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Westhaven Retirement Living. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He retired from the Sperry Corporation after 25 years of service and then attended seminary and became an ordained Methodist minister. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and camping and was active with the youth at his church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Smith Gentry.

He is survived by his son, Sam Gentry and wife Alice of Charlottesville; 1 grandson, Miles Gentry and wife Karen of Blacksburg; 1 great granddaughter, Elaine Gentry; a special niece, Ann Tate and husband Marvin of Abingdon; and several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph Kidd and the Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Tate, Sam Neeley, Donald Hagy, Jim Gose, Steve Smith, and Dickie Kiser.

The committal service will be conducted Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veteran's Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Rev. Gentry's adopted family, the staff of Westhaven Retirement Living, for their loving care and support.
