Strawberry Plains, Tn. - Roger Thomas Jones: Born March 4, 1951-Slipped Away December 31, 2020

How do you condense a life of nearly 70 years into a few paragraphs?  How do you put into words the love of a man for him and from him?  How do you describe someone not perfect but perfect for you?  Maybe not a great man as the world would see him, but a good, kind man with a gentle soul.

My husband was a collector. He loved trains, Christmas villages, wooden boxes and metal containers that he would fill with all kinds of odds and ends.  He saved plastic bags into which he saved papers, envelopes and old bills.  He knew this made me crazy, but he just couldn’t help himself.  Rog collected people too.  Anyone who needed a friend and found Rog would have one.  He was a wise counsel to many.

My sweetie loved to travel to Alaska and all the lower 48 states, Hawaii being the only state we didn’t get to.  He had a National Park Passport Book and was like a little kid when we got to add another stamp after a visit to a new National Park.

My Honey was affectionately known as “Santa” due to his white hair and beard, not to mention his round belly.  Rog loved playing the part, too - at October Trunk-or-Treats he would dress up and hand out candy canes and loved to hear the excited cries of the kids: “There’s Santa!”  I think he would have worn his Santa hat year round.  His ‘son’ Eric said, “He always reminded me of Santa, not because of the beard, but when he smiled his eyes had that twinkle in them, and even if you never met him before you would know by the smile that he was a kind and caring man.”

He attended Northwest University, an Assembly of God Bible college in Kirkland, Washington.  He graduated from East Tennesse State Univerdity with Honors, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Education.  He served on the Board of Abingdon First Assembly of God for almost 30 years before moving to the Sevierville, Tennessee area in August 2016 and joining Parkway Church of God, serving there as council member the past three years.

My husband was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin and remained a proud ‘Cheese Head’; Really - that man loved his cheese, the sharper the better, and he was loyal to his Packers.

My sweet Rog leaves behind our children whom he loved more than life itself: daughter, Jennifer Towne and husband Dana of Strawberry Plains, TN; sons Jason Jones (Shanna) of Sevierville, TN, Joshua Jones of Strawberry Plains, TN, and Jackson Jones of VA; daughters, Jasmine Bridgeman of Marion, VA, and Julia Keller of Kingsport, TN; granddaughters, Darby Burson Carr and husband Blaine of Kodak, TN, Nora Kate Towne of Strawberry Plains, TN, Anna and Kiera Keller of Kingsport, TN; grandsons Patrick “Ducky” Keller of Kingsport, TN, Trevor Towne and Monti Atkins of Strawberry Plains, TN, Joshua, Uriah and Eli Thomas Bridgeman of Marion, VA, and Gabriel Clash of Sevierville, TN; sisters Cher Nelson (Michael) Wisconsin of Dells, WI, Bonnie Carlson of Rochester, MN, and Shelly Colegrove (Stan) of Wasilla, AK; Bonus Mom Marlys Moore Jones of Winona, MN.  Sister and Brother-in-Law Linda and Kemper Rasnake of Abingdon, VA; ‘Brother’ Robert Brandes of Tampa, FL; Numerous nieces and nephews, and friends; Special Sons, Cody Lester, and Eric Vanover of VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley Thomas Jones and Caryle Anderson Jones; and brother, Michael “Mick”Jones.

Roger leaves me behind.  He was my beloved Husband of 49 years, my Best Friend of 50 years.  I loved him more than these words can convey, but most importantly I was so very loved by him.  He leaves our memories to sustain me.  I will always love and miss you, Honey Babe!

He loved his Lord and Savior and surely heard, “Well done thou good and faithful servant" as he arrived to his Heavenly Home.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
