Ruby Emma Sutherland, age 97, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at National Health Care in Bristol, VA. Emma was born to the late Prosper B. Sutherland and Nancy Violet Sutherland in Dickenson County, VA. She and her late husband of 70 years, Woodrow Sutherland, moved to Abingdon in 1986. Emma was of the Primitive Baptist Faith and enjoyed beautiful singing and wonderful words of faith by ministers. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed gardening, and enjoyed watching her birds. Mrs. Sutherland was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and also loved her caring friends and neighbors. In addition to her parents and husband, Emma is preceded in death by several siblings.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Rhett (Charlotte) Sutherland of Abingdon, VA and Mark Wilson (Linda) Sutherland of Bristol, VA; daughter, Frieda Ann Sutherland of Abingdon, VA; sister, June Taylor of Bristol, VA; five grandchildren, Dr. Kevin Scott (Pam) Sutherland, Kimberly Ann (Rick) Sturgill, Kim (Jeff) Roark, Stephanie (Mark) Brooks and Stacey (Mark) Conard; 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Elder Joel Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Russell County Cemetery with Steve Artrip, Wayne Sutherland, Denny Sutherland, Benny Sutherland, Phillip Sutherland and Bob Odell Sutherland serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Rod Taylor, Fonso Sutherland, Boone Sutherland and Bob Kuchan.
Visitation with the family will be 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Mrs. Sutherland's name.
