Shirley Ann Lee

d. April 9, 2012

Shirley Ann Lee, 77, died April 9, 2012 at her home in the Brumley Gap section of Poor Valley.

A native of Washington County, Shirley graduated from Virginia High School and Mary Washington College. She taught school for a few years and then went to work for IBM in California. After 25 years she retired from IBM in North California. There had never been any question, when she retired that she wanted to come home to Washington County. She bought her grandmother's house, where she had been born, restored it and moved back. After she got back she involved herself with the adult literacy program and volunteered as an instructor. There are those in Washington County that hopefully are better off because Shirley taught them to read.

Then she added the volunteer hospice program to her volunteerism. Countless hours were spent sitting with patients or running errands for their families.

Next came the Historical Society of Washington County where she would become the volunteer-of-the-day in their library.

And lastly she found the love of her life of organizations, the Animal Defense League. She served on their Board of Directors and for years took all the contact calls of ADL. Whether it was at midnight or three o'clock in the morning, Shirley would take a phone call and assist them in getting help for their animals. For people who needed financial help and ADL did not have the money, she dug into her pockets or tapped her friends for help and paid the bills herself.

Shirley was a really good person who was fair, compassionate and had a huge heart, for people and animals. She always put others first. The world is a better place because of her. Needless to say, she will be missed by people who knew her as well as thousands she helped that never got to meet her.

Shirley is survived by her nephew, Chris Lee of Albany, New York, and her cousins in Brumley Gap, Sue Duty, Don Lee, Pat Parris and Joan Worley and her best friend, Jane Oakes.

She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Anna Kate Lee and her brother, Howard Lee.

At her request there will be no memorial service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Defense League P.O. Box 2099 Abingdon, VA 24212.

Shirley's family and friends would like to thank her friends, sitters and caregivers, Melinda Tignor and Shauna Alexander for their care and attention that allowed her to spend most of her time in her home. Also they thank her medical care team of Dr. DeBord and Suzanne for all the support and care over the years.

Farris Funeral Service and Crematory, 427 E, Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210 (276-623-2700) are handling the arrangements.
