Stella Inez Patterson Wise

Abingdon, VA Stella Inez Patterson Wise, 93, died April 11, 2014 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was born February 14, 1921 in Washington County, Virginia, the fourth child of Amanda Ruth Minton Patterson and Greek B. Patterson. Inez was a 1938 graduate of Meadowview High School and was lettered in sports. She was captain of the basketball team her senior year. One team mate, Ruth Hill Coltrane, became a lifelong friend. Inez is survived by daughter Joyce Wise Dodd and son-in-law Larry D. Dodd; beloved nieces and nephews, Judy Patterson Carey, Deborah Elizabeth Patterson Mizelle, Thomas Rhea Casteel, Patricia Wise Butkovich, Cyndi Butkovich Harris and Julie Butkovich Horton; special nephew Norwood Ashley Barnes. Inez was a graduate of the Salon de Beaute School of Cosmetology and met Steve Wise when both were working in the Abingdon "town square." Steve and Inez were married in 1940 and traveled extensively before their first child, Joyce Ruth, was born in 1950. Their second child, a son, Stephen Stuart Wise, was born in 1953. Inez was preceded in death by son, Stephen, who died from Lou Gehrig's disease in 2004. Her husband of 70 years, Steve Robert Wise, died from complications of Alzheimers disease at the age of 95. Funeral services for Inez will be held at the Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. The service will be conducted by family friend Fr. Craig Wylie with Jane Austin Graham of Boone, NC participating. Members of the family, funeral leaders and pallbearers will meet at an offsite location prior to the service. Pallbearers for Inez will be Beau Briscoe, Timothy Thompson, Charles E. (Sam) Woolwine, James Ferreira, Rick Humphreys and Jason Harris III. Friends and family are encouraged to visit at Zazzy's restaurant, 380 East Main St. following the service. Owners will set aside a room for anyone wishing to visit in the casual atmosphere where lunch or sweets are available for purchase. Joyce wishes to thank Goldie Montgomery for her abiding love for Inez over many decades and her presence with Inez at the hour of her death. She also offers gratitude to Caris Hospice for its extraordinary service and comforts provided to Inez during the hours before her passing and continued comforts provided to the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to the Lou Gehrig's (ALS) Association, Development Department, 1275 K Street, NW, Suite 250, Washington, DC 20005; or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace Street, Richmond Virginia 23219. Clergy from St. Paul’s continue to provide spiritual care to Joyce and Larry.
