Sue Taylor Thayer, 77, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at her residence. Sue was born in Saltville, Va., daughter of the late Robert Henry Taylor and Eleanor Grace Lawson Taylor. She attended Johnston Memorial Nursing School and worked as a registered nurse in the community for many years, first as a public health nurse with Washington County Health Department and later as a school nurse for the Washington County School System, from which she retired in 2002. Sue was a member of Washington Chapel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, animals, and outdoor activities, and she was a devoted caregiver for family and friends. Most importantly, Sue was fun-loving and enjoyed spending time with her family, often traveling to wherever her children and grandchildren were playing sports.
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter Hershel Thayer, Sr., her son Hunter Hershel “Chip” Thayer, Jr., her grandson Hunter Hershel “Trey” Thayer III, and her sister Cleo McAllister.
She is survived by her daughter Melinda T. Leland and husband David, and their children Taylor Leland and daughter Emersyn Huffman, Haven Leland and Macie Leland; daughter Jackie T. Craft and husband Chad, and their children Coy Craft, Bailey Craft and Shelby Craft; granddaughter Madison Thayer and her mother Beverly; brother Bobby Taylor; sisters-in-law Susie Blevins and Katherine Thayer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to offer special appreciation to Sue’s numerous caregivers in the home and to Caris Hospice.
The funeral service for Sue Taylor Thayer will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with David Matlock officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 5:50 p.m. A private committal service will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the VHCC Foundation for the Sue Thayer Nursing Scholarship, Post Office Box 828, Abingdon, VA 24212.
