Thelma Hazel Ashbrook Sykes, age 92, a lifelong resident of Southwest Virginia passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at her home. She was a member of Tunnel Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Honaker, VA and attended Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church locally. Her hobbies included quilting and gardening.
She was born to the late Otis Ashbrook and Bessie Holland Ashbrook in Russell County, VA on August 20, 1921.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Dallas Clayton Sykes; two infant daughters, Peggy and Brenda Sykes; and six siblings.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Sykes and wife Gail of Bristol, VA; daughter, Shirley Jean Sykes of the home; three brothers: Fay Ashbrook of Abingdon, VA; Billy Ashbrook of Newark, OH; and Ernest Ashbrook and wife Irene of Chesapeake, VA; two grandchildren, Michelle Brown and husband Ray and Matthew Sykes all of Bristol, VA; and two great grandchildren, Chase and Grace Brown.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8th at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Rodger Castle officiating. Family and friends will travel in procession to Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Ted Blaylock, Chase Brown, Ray Brown, Gary Hubbard, Jim Miller, and Matthew Sykes will serve as pallbearers. The Men of Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
