Thomas McNeer Wise

Thomas McNeer Wise "Tom", age 89, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born on October 17, 1922, the oldest son of Herbert L. and Leaphy Kiser Wise. Mr. Wise was born on Hazel Mountain in Dickenson County, lived most of his life in the Greensprings area near Abingdon, and most recently in Bristol, VA. He proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Blair during World War II. After retirement from Appalachian Power Company, he enjoyed ruby mining and volunteer work on the Appalachian Trail. He attended Denton Valley Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne, and a special baby sister, Betty Ruth. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Clara Bailey Wise; two daughters, Jackie Slagle and husband Ted of Bristol, TN and Gail Toney and husband Wayne of Spartanburg, SC; three brothers, Ray Wise and wife Betty of Pataskala, OH, Lewis Wise and wife Nina of Dante, VA, and Hugh Wise and wife Linda of Bristol, TN; four grandchildren, Wes Combs, Shawn Toney, Jerry Toney, Mary Beth Combs Whitaker; and six great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Les Ketron and Dr. Gary Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, VA. The Bristol VFW Honor Guard will present Military Honors. Visitation will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be David Fields, Rusty Fields, Travis Fields, Kevin Hall, Jeff McDowell, and Jerry McDowell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Combs, Caleb Toney, and Jonathan Toney.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the second floor staff of Bristol NHC.
