Vernon Gaston Davis

Abingdon, VA – Vernon Gaston Davis, age 97 and the oldest member of the Brumley Gap Community, passed on Monday, September 11, 2017, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Vernon was born in Danville, VA and moved to Washington County as a young adult. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart after sustaining wounds during the battle for Okinawa. Mr. Davis retired after 33 years of employment at U.S. Gypsum and attended Taylor’s Chapel Church of Christ. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Betty Turpin Davis; wife of 70 years, Opal Duncan Davis; siblings, Jesse, Grover, Dink, Katie, Curtis, and Josie; and son-in-law, Harry W. Cook.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Cook of Abingdon, VA; grandson, Jeffery Odum and wife SiDonna of Alto, GA; great grandchildren, Cassie and Carrie; nieces, Betty Huppert and Debra Doak; nephew, Jimmy Davis; and two great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2017, in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Scott Spence officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. The family will receive friends at the home, 20644 Brumley Gap Road, Abingdon, VA, at any time on Wednesday, September 13, 2017.
