M. Virginia Russell Blackwell, age 86, went to be with her Heavenly Father, husband, and other loved ones on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. Virginia was a member of Shady Grove Pentecostal Church. She was a loving mother and devoted wife who greatly impacted many lives. Mrs. Blackwell loved to read her Bible and was employed at Harwood for over 30 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Russell and Virgie Lane Russell; husband, Leonard Able Blackwell; five brothers and two sisters.
She leaves behind three daughters, Carolyn (Joseph W.) Branson of Newport News, VA, Pat (Richard) Cozzolino of Abingdon, VA, and Brenda (Tony) Tabor of Evans, GA; two sisters, Bertie Wright of Newnan, GA and Lillian Barnes of Leland, NC; five grandchildren, Joseph L. Branson, Michelle Garrett, Richie Cozzolino, Ronald Tabor, and Jennifer Ansley; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special niece, Mildred Bradshaw.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Brandon Canter and Pastor David Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. View Methodist Cemetery with Joseph L. Branson, Joseph W. Branson, Tony Tabor, Ronald Tabor, and John D. Branson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Richard Cozzolino and Richard Isaac Cozzolino.
Visitation with the family will be held 6-8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Ann Evans and Mrs. Blackwell's many faithful telephone friends. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in Mrs. Blackwell's name.
