VIRGINIA TEAGUE SAUNDERS Abingdon, VA A memorial service will be conducted for Mrs. Virginia Teague Saunders at the Abingdon Baptist Church at 2 pm on Saturday, January 24th, 2015. Dr. Steven W. Pollard will officiate. Mrs. Virginia Saunders died on December 26th, 2014. She was 91. Born in York, Pennsylvania, on September 12th, 1923, she was the daughter of Tracy Talmon Teague and Mildred Gohn Teague. Her father's American lineage dated back to 1675 when the first known Teague forebearer immigrated to the Province of Maryland from Ireland. Virginia spent the early Depression years living with Teague relatives in Staley, North Carolina. She would later rejoin her father in Marietta, Georgia. In 1943 at a reception at the Marietta Country Club, she met Lt. Robert L. Saunders, Jr., a Navy pilot. They married on September 18th of that year. He returned to duty with his bombing squadron, completing over 3,000 hours of flight time on reconnaissance and attack missions in the South Pacific. They reunited after the war in 1945, and remained devoted to each other for nearly 62 years. Virginia and Bob Saunders moved to Abingdon following his retirement in 1981 as an engineer with Bell Laboratories in New York City and Holmdel, New Jersey. They were actively engaged in community affairs. Virginia Saunders was preceded in death by her son, Walter Teague Saunders, in 1985, and by her husband in 2005. She will be interred with both at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Attending the service will be her daughter, Susan S. Horne of Sharon, Massachusetts, and her son, Robert L. Saunders, III, of New Bern, North Carolina, along with their families. The family of Mrs. Saunders is being cared for by Farris Funeral Service & Crematory, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, (276) 623-2700. www.farrisfuneralservice.com
