Walter Rene Owens, 90, formerly of Clintwood, Va., passed at his residence on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Mr. Owens was a U.S. Navy Veteran, was employed by Pittston Coal Company for 44 years, and attended Pilgrim Baptist Church. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. Walter’s sense of humor will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Tolby Owens and Vola Ann Peterson Owens; brother, Marvin Daves; and sister, Jackie Tiller. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nell Fleming Owens; twin daughters, Jennifer (Gary) Adelson and Janet (Tony) Thompson; sister Ann Gracia; four grandchildren, Ashley Thompson (Jason) McGaha, Brent (Kelly) Thompson, Andy Adelson, and Megan Adelson; and four great- grandchildren, Karis, Aubrey, Bennett, and Laine.
A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Doug Findley officiating. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Temple Hill Memorial Park Chapel of Love Mausoleum. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Carbary, Ronnie Neel, Joe P. Johnson, Steve Powers, and the members of Pilgrim Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pilgrim Baptist Church, 16438 Pilgrim Lane, Abingdon, VA 24211, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org, in Mr. Owen’s name.
