Abraham Lincoln Chafin, affectionately known to family and friends as Lincoln, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on November 1, 1934, in Russell County, Virginia to the late Howard Chafin and Alta Willis Chafin, Lincoln lived a life marked by devotion to family, community, and a steadfast work ethic.
A proud graduate of Castlewood High School in Castlewood, VA, Lincoln answered the call of duty by serving his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career spanning four decades at Valleydale in Bristol, VA, where he was a skilled meat processor. Even after retirement, his dedication to hard work continued as he took on employment with Washington County Sheet Metal.
Lincoln’s roots ran deep in the community. Since 1964, he was a devoted member of East Bristol Baptist Church. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, and he honorably served on the Deacon board. Known for his kindness, gentleness, and welcoming nature, Lincoln had a unique ability to make everyone around him feel comfortable and valued. His talents extended beyond his professional life — he was renowned among friends for his ability to fix nearly anything, often repairing appliances and helping others in their times of need.
Family was Lincoln’s greatest joy. He shared a loving partnership with his wife, Hallie Henderson Chafin, to whom he was married for 68 years. Their life together was one filled with warmth, companionship, and adventure, particularly their cherished camping trips to the Smoky Mountains. Lincoln’s pride extended to his sons, Rick Chafin (Teresa), Howard Chafin (Rhonda), and to his brother, Doug Chafin (Teresa). His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren—Troy Wilson (Brandy), Jessica Swiney (Chad), Laura Nickels (Derek), and Morgan Anderson (Brad)—and his great-grandchildren Gabe, Peyton, Laken, Carlye, and Isabella. He was also deeply fond of his several nieces and nephews, who remember him fondly.
Lincoln’s spirit was enriched by his love of "The Country," his treasured home place in Russell County. He found peace in bird watching and deer hunting, and he was an avid sports fan, enjoying games of the Atlanta Braves and Lady Vols basketball with enthusiasm. These simple pleasures provided him with solace and happiness throughout his life.
