Annie Bernice Parnell, a beloved homemaker and cherished member of her community, passed away on January 13, 2026, in Abingdon, Virginia, at the age of 87. Born on December 19, 1938, in Hiwassee, Virginia to the late, Preston Jarrells and Bessie Kemp Jarrells. Bernice lived a life rich with love, laughter, and service to others.
Bernice was known for her unwavering kindness and welcoming spirit. She brought joy to those around her with her wonderful sense of humor, which remained steadfast even in times of difficulty. She had a unique ability to lighten any situation with laughter and was truly a source of warmth for her family and friends.
Throughout her life, Bernice was deeply committed to her family. She enjoyed spending time together with them and creating lasting memories. Her nurturing nature was evident in everything she did, from her cooking, to teaching vacation Bible school, to helping care for others. Bernice was actively involved in her faith community and regularly attended worship throughout her life, where her love for the church flourished.
In addition to her spiritual commitments, Bernice had a passion for the outdoors. She relished the simplicity of playing horseshoes barefoot at family reunions, activities that brought her immense joy and a sense of connection with her loved ones.
Bernice volunteered as a pink lady at the hospital in Richlands, where her compassion and dedication to helping others shone through. In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Viers, Lottie McPeak, Irene McPeak, Kitty Trail, Junior Jarrells, Graham Jarrells and Archie Jarrells.
Bernice leaves behind her loving husband, Doug Parnell; her devoted son, Tony Parnell (Shelley),and her adoring daughter, Angela Farmer (Delmer). She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren: Jordan Parnell (Annie), Dustin Farmer, Jacob Parnell, and Zachery Farmer (Alexandra), along with her great-grandchildren: Skyler, Eisley, Everett, Arowyn, and Elora. Bernice holds a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever remember the kindness and loving spirit of their Nanny.
A funeral service to celebrate Bernice’s life will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Abingdon Church of Christ, located at 19508 Dennison Drive, Abingdon, VA. Bernice will be laid to rest on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM in Charity Church Cemetery in Max Meadows, Virginia.
Annie Bernice Parnell will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her. Her legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will continue to inspire her family and friends for generations to come.
