Aubrey Stacy, age 88, passed peacefully on Saturday morning, November 29, 2025. He was surrounded by love, and lived a life marked by strength, adventure, and devotion to family. Known fondly as Dad and Poppaw/Grandfather, he will be remembered for his resilience, humor, and deep love for life.
Born and raised in Buchanan County, Aubrey came of age in a time and place where life was often hard and unforgiving. He began his career as an underground coal miner in Kentucky before operating a mine with his brother, Leonard, who was tragically killed in a roof fall in the late 1960s. In 1969, Aubrey joined the Virginia Division of Mines as a coal mine inspector and later served as an instructor for miners’ safety certifications in blasting, electrical systems, foreman training, and more. He also held numerous industry certifications and was a certified EMT. He retired in 1985 due to black lung and emphysema, later settling in Washington County, Virginia.
In retirement, Aubrey lived with the same devotion and enthusiasm that guided his working years, always driven by love for his family and the joy of everyday adventures. His sharp mind and many talents found expression in storage unit treasure hunts, home improvements, and the satisfying work of turning forgotten items and spaces into something useful. He found comfort in his projects, his routines, and most of all, in being surrounded by family.
In his presence, even quiet moments felt full: full of humor, history, and the warmth of a man who loved and lived with intention.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lola Stacy; sisters, Mary Sollien and Ruby Cornette; brothers, Adam Stacy, Clyde Stacy, and Bill Stacy; daughter, Kathy Woodson; son, Ken Stacy (Christie Jo); grandchildren, Heather Langston (Brandon), Caroline Jaquish (Spencer), Catherine Warren, Courtnie Marion (Kasey), Meagan Stacy, and Jared Stacy; and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Stacy; sisters, Bertha Goodwin and Mabel Robinette; brothers, James Cook, Joe Cook, J.D. Cook, and Leonard Cook; and his parents, Mandy and Adam Stacy.
Aubrey will live on in the stories we tell, the laughter he inspired, the lessons he taught, and the love he poured into everyone around him. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and family devotion.
He will be deeply missed.
