She was born on January 7, 1946, in Saltville, Virginia, to the late, George David and Janet Louise Lee Blankenbeckler. Barbara's life was characterized by her compassion, warmth, and commitment to those around her.
For over 40 years, Barbara worked as a medical assistant in the operating room at Johnston Memorial Hospital, where she built lasting relationships with both colleagues and patients. Her dedication to her profession was evident, and her kindness made her a trusted figure in the lives of many.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Cowan.
Described by those who knew her as kind and welcoming, Barbara had a remarkable ability to make others feel at ease. Her personality shone brightly as she lifted spirits and brightened the lives of those around her. Whether cheering for UT football games on the radio—where she memorized players' names and stats—or passionately following Caitlyn Clark's basketball schedule, Barbara's enthusiasm for life was contagious. She enjoyed the pleasures of homecooked meals and cherished the company of family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her cousin and caregiver, Darrell Cannon and his wife, Brenda, along with her cousins, Billy Ed Yeatts, Mike Yeatts, Mike Lee, J.C. Lee, Jerry Cannon, Judy Black, Patsy Smith and Gary Woodard. Additionally, she leaves behind special friends Judy Holmes and Dolly, who will forever hold cherished memories of their time spent together.

A funeral service to honor her life will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Mount Rose Cemetery Mausoleum in Glade Spring, Virginia, with Rev. Jerry Eggers and J.K. Perkins officiating. The burial will follow the service. Barbara will be missed, but her spirit and the love she shared will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hillview and Chad Markland for the love and care they provided for Barbara.
